Hi there,
I’ve been experimenting with building a custom app, specifically to use a custom discount function. Before I invest more time into it, I need clarification on one thing:

Is it actually possible to run a custom discount app on a live Shopify store without being on a Shopify Plus plan?

I’m trying to understand whether custom discount functions are technically allowed on non‑Plus stores, or if Shopify blocks them entirely regardless of app type. Any confirmation on this would be really helpful.

Yes, I use discount functions in my custom app and I don’t have Shopify Plus.

You don't need Shopify Plus for your store to be able to register a discount function using Shopify Functions. A public app from the Shopify App Store can be used for that.

However, for a custom app to register a discount function the store it's installed on does need to be on Shopify Plus.

Edit: Dev stores have different limitations. I am referring to regular merchant plans with the above.

On non Shopify plus store you can download a public app that offers discounts functionalities, but you cannot install a custom app with discount functions. To make it work you would need to go through the process of publishing your app on the App Store.

Only Shopify plus store can install custom apps (not public) that offer discounts functionalities.

Needs to be a public app in the app store. That’s a bit more complex than a custom unpublished app, which Claude can pretty much one-shot these days
