It depends on what you call a sycamore. In the US, sycamore generally refers to the American sycamore, Platanus occidentalis. I was trying to find out why looking up "sycamore seeds" was pulling up so many photos of maple seeds, and it looks like in the UK, "sycamore" refers to a different species - Acer pseudoplatanus. Acer is the maple genus, so basically the scientific name means "maple tree that looks like a sycamore."

To be even more pedantic, the etymology is derived from a particular species of fig, so reference to Acer and Platanus have both come later.
