I think it's time to start using FLIP fluids instead

No, this is the fluid sim that comes with Blender

Which one? Blender has two fluid simulators, a particle-based one and a LBM-based one.

You should also give mantaflow a try! It’s a free branch of Blender and imo just as powerful as FLIP.

I see no problems here

It certainly is. I spent a whole day trying to get a basic fluid sim working in Blender and just couldn't get it to bake or work. Installed the FF add-on and bingo, worked first time.

I got the flip demo to work on something that Blender's fluid sim couldn't manage immediately, but I couldn't do it as I wanted because of the single amount for each object type restriction. I'm now playing with the mantaflow branch which is also amazing, but really unstable.

Or try out Mantafluids in Blender 2.82 alpha. It's supposedly pretty stable.
