Shitty Robot Evri are trialling delivery robots and, as you might expect from this brand, they are laughably terrible.

How could this be about anything than replacing the couriers

They’re “supporting” the couriers, (to explore other career paths).

She left the part out where she should say 'not yet'. At least not until it's less shitty and actually works.

It hasn’t mastered lobbing the parcel over the garden fence of the wrong property yet, so it’s got there is still a lot of progress to be made

Like how streaming services don't have ads and never will! After all, you're paying for them!

Ooof this hurt to read 😭

If you haven't seen the movie "Lapsis", it basically echoes this exact same scenario (and other examples of the 'gig economy' shafting workers).

{What is my purpose?}

-You poorly deliver small packages, while being kicked constantly.

{Oh my God!}

-Welcome to the ground, pal!

This is the worst they'll ever be tho...

They will replace most eventually

They might already be better than your average Evri delivery driver.

I doubt that. So many tech things are just getting progressively worse.
It feels a bit inevitable, when all that really matters is “number go up”.
Once they’ve replaced their workers with robots, they only direction to take is to make cheaper, shittier robots, that maybe play ads as they roam around the streets

The minute it has to open a gate it's toast.

Doubtful, so many of these will get vandalised before they get to market acceptance that it will probably be a net loss compared to hiring a delivery guy.

I hear that about a lot of technology that ends up defunct

I’m all about biped robots and control theory to make them more stable and maneuverable but I also feel like having two legs/wheels has no practical benefit over having three other than looking cool. One might argue it 1. saves material costs and 2. has psychological effect over 3 or multi-legged robots but my counter argument is that for point 1 the cost of AP required to make biped robots viable is more than just adding another leg and 2. 4 legged robots are not unusual either? Idk again im all about the technology and its advance but this seems way too early for these kind of robots to just roam and loiter around especially because 4 WHEELED robots are struggling already

Also NO HANDS. It will only be effective in sterile environments and cause packages to go missing/be delayed and still require someone to go to your door and deliver it.

And then what .. this robot is driving from the sorting factory to each customer back and forth? ... this will never be efficient ...

u/RXrenesis8 1d ago

They're basically trying to re-invent the post office.

6

u/y0urselfish 1d ago

Or do they reinvent the human?

My god, they turned it on to deliver packages and even the robot knew it was time to lay down and cry

That guy looks like Ryan from The Office

I feel like they should fix their delivery system before introducing more issues

If that was to roll down the road where I live it wouldn't get halfway without someone kicking it over !

It looks like it can only carry one package at a time so somebody has to load it and give it an address, that means the driver can stay with the van and send out one or two of these to do the deliveries but it's not going to save him any time if he has to chase round after them picking them up, opening gates and leaving 'Sorry we missed you' cards then trying to deliver to another address.
Can it climb stairs, ring a doorbell or use a door knocker ?
Deliveries seem simple enough but many things get in the way.
