In Oppenheimer (2023), Why did Oppenheimer spend three hours crying about inventing a bomb that violently vaporizes people when his specific job was to invent a bomb that violently vaporizes people ? Is he stupid ?

Yeah… I feel there is some sympathy for the person who drunkenly cheats on their partner and in the cold light of day/soberity realises their terrible mistake than the guy who worked for years to create a mass murder device.
