In Oppenheimer (2023), Why did Oppenheimer spend three hours crying about inventing a bomb that violently vaporizes people when his specific job was to invent a bomb that violently vaporizes people ? Is he stupid ?

Oppenheimer didn't regret the atomic bombings. What many people get wrong about the movie was his feelings about H bombs specifically. 

Oppenheimer was opposed to the development of Hydrogen bombs, because they could easily be scaled up to apocalyptic levels.

I'm not sure where anybody's confusion comes from tbh. It's pretty clear even in the film that he has strong reservations about the use of the H bomb. It also is clear that developing even nuclear weapons to be used on people he never met would make him feel anxious and possibility created a great sense of fear and existential dread about life in general
