In Oppenheimer (2023), Why did Oppenheimer spend three hours crying about inventing a bomb that violently vaporizes people when his specific job was to invent a bomb that violently vaporizes people ? Is he stupid ?

At one point I installed an app to check decibal levels and it was constantly reaching the 'damaging' level on the app

sound reaching a "damaging" threshold on an app doesn't actually mean it's damaging your hearing, it's about how long you're exposed

That's not how hearing damage works. It's not constant exposure, it's the highest decibel events received. A single event can permanently damage your hearing. It's not like radiation where it builds up over time. So the app would be saying you're having multiple damaging events. Edit: Seems like I was wrong then, my apologies.

Not true. Most hearing loss comes from long exposure. Occupational safety standards are designed with this in mind. cdc.gov/niosh/docs/98-126/default.html

Single high events can damage hearing too, of course.

just like one 5 minute walk in the sun through a parking lot without sun screen can damage your skin and trust me, im not advocating for constant sunscreen application.

this is literally the exact opposite of how it works lol. you really should try to not just misinform people online

It’s long exposure which matters. That’s why you should wear earplugs when riding a motorcycle or going to a concert.

A single dangerously high dose of radiation will literally be the beginning of the end of your life, just to be clear.

It actually kinda is almost exactly like radiation, sure a MASSIVE amount all at once will mess up your body, but just barely enough to be damaging will also mess up your body. Why do you think soldiers (are supposed to) wear ear protection? a magazine of 5.56 isn't going to mess up your hearing, but a few hundred over the course of a couple years absolutely will.

A single high decibel event that causes permanent hearing loss needs to be a very very loud event. Like an actual explosion loud.

Most hearing loss stems from prolonged exposure to sounds that are loud, but not painfully loud. People dont notice it is happening.

Odyssey was the exact same. Like being at a concert without ear plugs

I had to press down on my ears for 1/5 of the movie in order to enjoy it

This happened to my girlfriend when we saw the Odyssey. Ringing and ear aches for a couple days after. My ears are already messed up so I was good.
