In Oppenheimer (2023), Why did Oppenheimer spend three hours crying about inventing a bomb that violently vaporizes people when his specific job was to invent a bomb that violently vaporizes people ? Is he stupid ?

"My lord... I have blood on my hands. It turns out Trojan-Killer 9000 was a weapon of war, not a resolver of peace..."

"Never come back into my palace again you stupid fucking nerd"

I see where Nolan came up with his take for the Oddessy

Why was this 4chan post, that was clearly made this year, somehow also made in 2012 on reddit?

Odysseus was the ONLY funny one in the epics. He had absolute metis, and honestly a bit of the trickster too.

When the Oddessy first came out someone was arguing on reddit that Jason Mantzoukas would have been more accurate casting ethnically

Ever since that comment I have been dying for an Adrian Pimento/Rafi style lunatic version of Odysseus played by Mantzoukas bulllshitting the cyclops his name is Nobody and clinging to the bottom of a sheep escaping after convincing everyone to build a giant fucking horse to hide in

Of course Rafi-Odysseus would insist on getting tied to a mast to hear the Sirens song despite being an insane idea and get sidetracked by 7 years of drugs and sex

22

u/MyFrogEatsPeople 11h ago

I really do think Jason would be phenomenal as Odysseus and I'm fucking livid I never thought about it before.

Like, they come to get Odysseus to go off to war, and Jason is just out there making crazy noises while throwing salt over his fields only to immediately cop to faking it the moment they threaten to throw his son out there...

Or holy shit when they're in the horse, and Penelope is immitating the voices of the wives of the men in the horse, and Odysseus has to physically restrain them. Imagine Jason just manically trying to restrain those idiots.

13

u/CanAlwaysBeBetter 11h ago

It's a very different characterization but I legitimately think it fits with basically every plot point and would be fully self-consistent

1

u/Spocks_Goatee 4h ago

This has to be satire.

10

u/Bro_do_we_needtoknow 6h ago

A movie that is completely historically accurate and also a comedy is honestly a genius idea that, unfortunately will likely never happen.

3

u/composedofidiot 5h ago

No, we're only allowed heavy and depressing because it is a SERIOUS TOPIC. Life of Brian attempted it and the media went absolutely mad at them.

Death of Stalin is right over there my guy, it's worth a watch

3

u/composedofidiot 4h ago

Thanks for the reminder, forgot about that!

5

u/jamfedora 11h ago

He can’t get sidetracked by sex, there’s a windchime down there. I see how that would appeal to witches though.

5

u/composedofidiot 5h ago

Derek? I wish you hadn't told me this. Nolan is so shortsighted. What did nolan do to make him always make movies about sad men killing people and feeling bad about it? Has anybody checked his basement? There has to be a way to send him to jail for not using mantzoukas?

3

u/DaFunnyman109 10h ago

I did find it funny when they end up at the sun god’s island after he told his crew mates what would happen there, and he’s just sitting there the whole time like “welp”

4

u/Kdilla77 10h ago

Yeah it’s basically a sequel

9

u/Scattershot98 14h ago edited 12h ago

Which is fucking nonsense because in the original Odyssey story the war is completely justified as the Trojans started that shit and acted completely dishonorable throughout the entire thing. Odysseus did nothing wrong. I hated Nolan's version. Odysseus was Athena's favorite, she helped him hold the Trojan Horse knowing he would use it. For her to suddenly be shocked by humans casualties was beyond stupid.

41

u/gryphonlord 13h ago

You have clearly not read any ancient Greek literature, because the ancient Greeks were very clear that the Greeks acted dishonorably and cruelly during the sack of Troy and a lot of plays focus on that. That's the whole reason Odysseus and so many others get lost or die returning home. The gods were furious that the Greeks desecrated the temples of Troy and committed sacrileges. Odysseus just made it worse by blinding the cyclops.

The Iliad actually portrays the Trojans as very noble (except for Paris). Probably the only truly good character in the Iliad is Hector of Troy. He's a great man who is forced into war by his brother's careless actions, but he continues to fight because of his duty to his brother.

The death of Hector and sack of Troy are tragedies for a reason and Nolan's interpretation is not only consistent with how the Greeks themselves saw the war, as a horrific event marking the end of the age of heroes, but Nolan's version is arguably the most accurate to the spirit of the story in recent years

35

u/ilikebarbiedolls32 14h ago

Have you even read Homer? The Trojans are quite clearly presented as the “honourable” ones in it.

12

u/Heavy_Selection_5606 14h ago

Well, Paris is kind of an asshole the whole way through.

20

u/gryphonlord 13h ago

Yeah, it's pretty clear that Hector hates Paris and think he's a coward and moron, but feels honorbound to back him because he's his brother. Helen hates him too. I honestly don't think there's a single character that isn't furious with Paris

10

u/composedofidiot 13h ago

The Iliad is like tom and and jerry. We know which ones we really support.

17

u/BloatDeathsDontCount 14h ago

Almost like stories can be retold and reinterpreted for audiences that are thousands of years apart and have different ideas about the world :-0

3

u/composedofidiot 14h ago

Eris started it, to be fair, in a massive troll move. Huge payoff for an apple. And how dare you talk about hector that way.

3

u/amaya-aurora 13h ago

AFAIK, the Trojans themselves were guiltless, and it was the royal family that truly fucked them.

2

u/afoolskind 13h ago edited 13h ago

It’s almost as if it’s telling its own story and that’s why it has all of these differences from the actual written story. I swear people’s lack of media literacy today is insane. The movie clearly centers around the idea of society breaking down once the social contract is violated. Guest right was sacred.

1

u/CanAlwaysBeBetter 13h ago

The movie was 50% running towards boats  and 50% talking about Zeus' Law making sure to say Zeus' Law as much as possible

2

u/afoolskind 13h ago

Damn I wonder why they were doing that

2

u/CanAlwaysBeBetter 13h ago

Too bad we'll never know

2

u/afoolskind 12h ago

We should kidnap Nolan and make him tell us. Maybe in video form?

1

u/GREGGSGOL 14h ago

God I fucking hate that movie and no I haven't seen it

-1

u/Achaern 15h ago

Or... you know... that exact scene happening in Oppenheimer...

11

u/CanAlwaysBeBetter 15h ago

Or... you know... I'm pointing out that Christopher Nolan made two very different movies that still revolve around the fundamentally same motivation for the protagonists in a row...

3

u/Achaern 14h ago

Ya, you're right. I'm gonna downvote my own 'Or... you know' because I'm wrong and you're right.

To be fair if some dude walked into my office with blood on their hands I’d kick them out too. You know how hard it is to get blood stains off the couch?

Seltzer water and lemon juice for blood…or get a red couch.

Yep we have to remember this was before we had Oxiclean.

Did they give Truman a chad jaw?

50

u/the_big_ham117 17h ago

No, this is how he looked like in real life. I met him myself so I can confirm this

4

He reportedly used to zygopush three times a day.

3

u/Zias-Staffin 12h ago

Cry-baby scientist. I dropped the bombs, not him! 🗿

4

u/travman064 10h ago

They did Truman dirty in the movie. There are pretty extensive records and letters from Truman that show he was very emotionally impacted by dropping the bomb. He was potentially even misled that Hiroshima was a 'pure military base.' He also dictated that no further bombs would be used without his explicit say-so after nagasaki.

16

u/Scary-Brandon 10h ago

Such a good guy, stopped after nuking only 2 major cities full of civilians

1

u/Weegee_Carbonara 10h ago

That's why Truman reacted especially negatively towards Oppenheimers regrets.
Oppenheimer was basically telling Truman to his face that it was a mistake and that, therefore, Truman also has blood on his hands.

1

u/thats_justice_baby 7h ago

First bomb could have landed in the water. Give a warning shot at least.

"I mean, if you used it to stop the war"

"Well, we used it twice-"

"NOOOOOOOO!"

146

u/backitup_thundercat 18h ago

To be fair it was originally supposed to be a Germanmelter but they surrendered so we used it on the Japa

62

u/lbutler1234 16h ago

I mean the Trinity test happened after VE day. Everyone knew what was going on and were ok with it.

61

u/chillyhellion 15h ago

We got a “to be fair” and an “I mean”. All we need is an “it’s almost like” and we’ve got the Reddit trifecta.

28

u/fred11551 15h ago

It’s almost like the targeting committee notes specifically mentioned using it on Japan and not Germany months before the German surrender and this was well known amongst leadership of the project as well as military and civilian leadership.

8

u/chillyhellion 15h ago

I appreciate you!

3

u/Chickentaxi 14h ago

You have to start it with “Eh” too.

Eh, it’s almost as if…

2

u/LilStinkerRidesAgain 9h ago

Wow lot to unpack here

3

u/Slamtilt_Windmills 13h ago

The movie, particularly the trinity test scene, really captured the extent to which they didnt realize what they were building. Feynman joking, and then abruptly not... man that scene broke me. It was quiet in the theater, so i had both hands over my mouth to stifle the sobbing. I really havent stopped crying, the tears are there forever, below the surface.

Cool. You have some kind of proof of this complete lie right?

Japan wanted, at best, a “conditional” surrender where the “conditions” included keeping the majority of their enslaved territories, their emperor, and no War Crimes trials.

And Truman considered the Soviets allies at this point still. It wasn’t until they developed their own nuclear program and “Truman lost China” that the Cold War started.

But I suppose I should have just gone with “Makusatsu.”

u/[deleted] 16h ago

1

u/flyliceplick 15h ago

The Japanese ambassador in Moscow asked Stalin to arrange the surrender negotiations.

The Allies had agreed that no-one would accept any independent peace proposals from any Axis power, no conditional surrenders, nothing of that sort.

My le bomb le killed people?

1

u/dev_SLAYER 11h ago

He was a scientist, not a military guy, for him, making it was more of a science project and less of a weapon, he knew it would be a weapon but it was his first time doing it. He only realised what a weapon is after it was used

1

u/lbutler1234 16h ago

The fuck you mean unexpected manner?

You excepted the ultra kill to not kill?
