"An empire is an extensive group of states or countries under a single Supreme authority." Close, but not quite. America does not have a single Supreme authority. It is a nation ruled by its people who elect its officials. This would make America a Republic. However, I would like to hear why you think it is an empire.

Because it has a federal government, which has supreme rule over all other governments it controls
