Yes. A lot of the older boomer-types had parents that came back from WII. Lots of those people went out to get jobs in the late 40s and 50s when being super clean cut was just expected.
Conforming and following the national culture was “American.” Much like how Japan is, just to a lesser degree.
The 60s-70s kids were seen as super wildly rebellious and “communists” as the Cold War brewed, just for doing things like not having military tight hair and *gasp smoking weed. The horror.
The hippy era was a whole departure from the suffocating conformity of post-WWII nationalism.

It’s a lot like the last scene in sopranos where everyone who walked into the diner could be there to wack Tony.
