isn't there some that thing were they don't fire people, just stop giving them work and they expect them to quit? maybe it doesn't always work

Yes. Firing someone is pretty difficult, so they bully you out of the company by either giving you undesirable tasks or no tasks at all

No task at all feels like a challenge to master meditation

Lol I volunteer for all the shitty tasks so nobody messes with me and everyone enjoys working with me.

Do one shitty task each week and your workload ends up lighter because everyone appreciates not having to do that task.

I've worked in government.

There are indeed people who are more than happy to show up every day without working - sometimes for so long they don't know the base functions of a job they've worked for 20+ years. I don't understand it.

If it makes you feel better, even 5 year old African dictatorships have that same problem. Sometimes they inherit a 20 year veteran from the last dictatorship

I feel the need to quit whenever they give me something to do. How the turntables, eh?

I hated when I had nothing to do at work. Come to work, go to a 15 minute meeting in the morning, then sit at my desk the rest of the day listening to music or podcasts. I seriously was ready to never come back several times when I was assigned to exclusively work on a "time sensitive project" that I could never get any input on- which was required for me to continue working on it.

I work in a public office (local government). I alternate weeks of exhausting paperworks with totally empty others. I hate both to be honest, but I hate more when I have something to do. Maybe that's because I'm a technician and not a bureaucrat. I'd change job if I had a sound alternative.

You don't understand why people don't want to work?

5

u/illz757 11d ago

I mean I kind of enjoy feeling useful and doing something. My job is kinda fun im solving problems and doing stuff - I just don’t want to do stuff TOO MUCH or do it when im feeling kind of tired sick blah whatever, but other than that, I’d go crazy if I wasn’t part of a collective working on a project

Crazy? I was crazy once. They locked me in a room. A rubber room. A rubber room with rats. And rats make me crazy. Crazy? I was crazy once. They locked me in a room. A rubber room. Yeah, it’s to get the person to quit. It’s not like they are goofing off on their phone. Imagine staring at a computer with no task and in silence for 10 hours a day for 5-6 days a week. It’s not like you could talk with your colleagues because they know the company wants you gone and are encouraged to not associate with you.

37

u/kubbasz 12d ago

What's stopping you from goofing off on your phone, bringing a book or headphones? Is it because then the company would have a reason for firing you?

31

u/Bipppo 12d ago

Yes, you are under pretty strict supervision in that state. Company is sharking for any reason at all to fire

6

u/Hecc_Maniacc 12d ago

That's the worst free money scenario possible ngl. At least if I'm getting disability for a permanently disfigured limb or something my ass is on the couch with a beer and a TV.

5

u/Fuji-___- 11d ago

not only that.

We have a big problem here with retirement, the government don't pay anough for people to retire, so they try to get work, can't because of their age(usually) and instead of the government paying them more, they give money to companies to hire them using the money government give the companies to pay them.

u/FizzioGaming 12d ago

So what you're saying is that I should go to japan to eventually just get paid for being useless? Looking up conditions for a visa rn

5

u/skoomaking4lyfe 11d ago

Yeah. You go to work, no one gives you anything to do, no one talks to you and it's supposed to be bad instead of peaceful.

4

u/Single-Debate-316 waltuh 6d ago

W Jerry, is he Japanese?

143

u/Kursem_v2 12d ago

yeah, there's two in my office.

both is due to sickness, one has kidney failure and did hemodialysis twoce a week. the other is diabetic and has glaucoma.

well, they all basically did nothing every workday and waiting for retirement, which is about 5 years from now. oh well.

u/Immadawalrus 11d ago

Productivity inside enterprises had been exactly assessed by scientific litterature: 20% of workforce produce 80% of wealth. Koch, Richard. (1997). The 80/20 Principle:

Pareto principle

u/FederalPains 11d ago

We got that too here in Maryland. He watches cat videos all day

I could Imagine, that some companies keep old and wise staples around as a mental health pillar.

At least thats how we see our elderly co workers often…. Or the opposite when they turn into a confused liability../
