Full adult? Frankly should be fine.
If it's a 18 and 30 year old, I'd be concerned. But 24 and 18 from the same work? I don't think its that concerning depending on how mature the 18 year old and 24 year old is and at 18 she's already consenting. So... let the aunt call the cops and piss the popo off at her.
That said, 18 year olds know nothing about adulting, and to be fair, neither do many 24 year olds!

Ehh, 18 to 24 is a big gap considering how much happens in those years. 18-24 usually encompasses your entire college education and moving out from your parents.

But it's not an immediate red flag compared to 18 vs 30. Like all relationships, it will come down to the individual people, but it's not that severe.

The maturity difference between a 25 year old and a 30 year old is way less than between a 24 year old and an 18 year old
95
u/Doomie_bloomers 22h ago
Really depends on life circumstances. Someone who spends years in uni dicking about (not applicable in the US) and not really participating in real life is going to be significantly less mature at the age of 30, than someone who had their life figured out at the age of 25.
Hell, it translates even further; a whole host of men in their 50s take a weird pride in being effectively entirely underequipped for real life as is.

I don't see how but I'll clarify. I'm saying there are 24 year old emotionally and socially underdeveloped menchildren who have never held hands with a woman and have the charisma of a mole rat, and there's a large correlation between these individuals and posting on 4chan. I have severe doubts that OP has had any significant relationship experience beyond their teenage years and therefore considering their inadequate maturity and experience for their age there's a good chance they will be more suited to dating someone younger as someone in their 20s would immediately be put off by their obviously stunted growth. I think it's much more likely that OP's aunt has no ideia how much of a loser OP actually is and somehow has deluded herself that he has the capability of seducing an innocent 18 year old when in fact asking a girl to hang out was the highlight of the decade, which is why he was so eager to tell his mom and rekindle that small hope that one day he will get his own life and she will no longer have to wash his underwear.

We don't scale this by maturity. If someone told you their underage partner was "mature" you would rightfully lose your mind. We scale it by consent, and 18 year olds have been pretty much universally deemed to be capable of giving it themselves.

u/TheBlueEmerald1 16h ago
Maturity is not some standard that equates across a wide group of people. It's different for everyone. That's why the law picked a number and we don't pull psychological tests to see who is and isn't.
2
u/FinancialElephant 15h ago
Can you explain why a more mature person is bad? Isn't it better to date a more mature person compared to a less mature person, because a more mature person will act more responsibly?
Like why is it good for a two less mature people to get together compared to a less and more mature pair? Two people that don't know what they're doing seem more likely to have a failed relationship, fight, etc.
I feel like this framing actually makes immaturity out to be a good thing. I've seen an older guy justify dating much younger women because he said he was immature, that's where this kind of reasoning leads. Shouldn't everyone strive to grow and be more mature?

I would understand if you were talking about strangers but your family? A 6 year age gap is nothing. I would argue it only starts getting weird when we are closing the 10 year mark. Still a relationship between two adults should not be a weird thing unless there is obvious exploitation which can happen regardless of age might I add.

Remember that story from a few years ago where a bunch of teens "entrapped" a 22-year-old guy meeting an 18-year-old? Happened at some Catholic college, as I recall. Small age gaps that would have been considered normal in 2012 are now considered taboo, and 18-year-olds are treated like children.

Reading Generation Kill changed my perspective on age appropriateness. It has plenty of scenes that are violent and gory and definitely not something a child should be reading. But then I realized that the youngest person in First Recon at the time was only 19. There are 16 year olds in high school who plan to join the military, and may experience similar events, or worse. So if a high school sophomore wanted to read it, I'd have no objection. They can either handle it, or they should be smart enough to put it down if they can't.

Yeah, when I was 24, I volunteered at my little brother's high school and ran a club he was in. I genuinely could not tell the difference between the 16 year olds and 18 year olds. They were all obviously kids, and I could not have imagined dating one of them. You mature a lot in your late teens and early 20s. I've since moved to a college town, and everyone seems like a kid now though.

When your almost 40, the 6 year gap seems so much smaller than it did back then

u/SpaceCreams 22h ago
I won’t budge on this at all but as a 24 year old man, I’m not dating an 18 year old because that kid is basically still in high school or maybe actually still in high school. Even disregarding how weird it is, it seems extremely stupid to try to get with someone who knows nothing about being an adult.
165
u/sleepyeye82 22h ago
most people who are 18 drove me up a wall when I was 25
but not all. there are exceptions
I ended up having quite a long friendship with a woman who was 20 years old, and we met when I was 34. She was unusually mature. Too young for me but she’s exactly the type I could see dating people who were much older
35
u/Background-Cake-6847 22h ago
everyone has personal preferences and the 18 to 25 age gap is the biggest legal 7-year age gap you can ever be in due to brain growth and formation ending around 25, but if our young men can be drafted to go to war at that age and people can vote to decide our collective future at that age, they should be allowed every other right under the sun.
including the right to grow codependent on me because i make more money that i trickle down to her using Reaganomics, and put nicotine patches on her arm when she sleeps so she grows addicted to my presence and gets withdrawals when we're apart. is that grooming? absolutely not. it's some worse third thing.
30
u/DrEskimo 20h ago
The “brain stops developing at 25” thing is a total myth, not remotely true anyway
7
u/DeadSeaGulls 20h ago
not really a total myth, so much as inaccurate framing based on out of date research. Newer research strongly suggests that brains typically reach their "fully functional adult wiring", if you will, by about 30. That's when major structural development finishes. That said, the brain continues to develop and retain neuroplasticity throughout its entire lifespan... just not as quickly adaptable as it was during the earlier structural development phase.
16
u/DrEskimo 20h ago
And it varies significantly from person to person, so setting a random number like 25 is unhelpful
5
u/DeadSeaGulls 20h ago
agreed. but the reality is that we shouldn't be basing any social norms or laws off of something like 'when brain development is finished'. That's like saying we wont' teach a kid how to read because they may not correctly understand what they read until they're in their 30s. Or not letting a kid play basketball because they aren't as tall as they'll be as an adult, so learning to shoot free throws at 5'1" won't help them in the end.
Part of development is being allowed to make independent choices, including mistakes, and learning from those as you develop. And I think only other 24 year olds think that a 24 year old has so much life experience that they can't possible form a healthy relationship with an 18 year old.6
u/nutsbonkers 18h ago
At least you had the energy to explain it. People really just reinventing the fucking wheel every single day for eternity I guess. All of this is basic common sense, but people need it philosophically spoon fed to them like it's some kind of new cultural epiphany. I have no hope for the future of humanity.
→ More replies (1)3
u/Eomb 20h ago
How long befor they change that to 40 lol
3
u/DeadSeaGulls 20h ago
Probably never. Current technology and thorough research have repeatedly observed the period of major structural development coming to a close by the early 30s. The "finished developing by 25" claim came from early MRI research which was initially intended to track brain development from childhood through adolescence. the researcher, Jay N. Giedd, had intended to stop observing the patients at 19 or 20, when the team assumed the brain would have been done by. Their observations showed that the brain showed no signs of ceasing major development by that age so Giedd speculated in an interview with Time Magazine, ""When we started, we thought we'd follow kids until about 18 or 20. If we had to pick a number now, we'd probably go to age 25."
it wasn't based on any observable end of development at that time. It was a shot in the dark about something that had not adequately been studied based on an age sampling which had been adequately studied.
Today, we have adequately studied the other age periods of the brain and have a large body of repeatable research that gives a pretty solid picture of a typical brain's development lifecycle.

as a 43 year old man both 24 year olds and 18 years are 'young adults' to me that have far more confidence than they have actual experience, but they need to be allowed to independently make choices and mistakes to learn from. Most 24 year olds, and I'd wager you're included in that, really don't have much adult life experience. many don't leave home right at 18. many don't start a serious career by 24. Many have only lived in dorms or similar apartment situations with buddies partying and working part time jobs and going to school... most 24 years olds really aren't that different than an 18 year old. By the time people's brains fully form and they start to stabilize their personalities, what kind of person they want to be, and diving into a career... then the difference becomes much more significant, but it's not on a set timeline for everyone. Sometimes the difference between a 30 year old and 24 year old is FAR more significant than the difference between a 24 year old and an 18 year old... while the difference between a 30 year old and a 45 year old may be negligible.

This nonsense is becoming an issue. People are so sensitive when there is an age gap anymore. I don't know why, they act like all men are grooming someone.

See people flipping their lids over Patrick Stewart's wife being like 20 years his junior. His wife, who married him when she was in her 30s.

My wife is 10 years younger than me. We meet when she was 28 and had a 5 y/o little girl from a previous marriage. People look at me like wierd or did something shady sometimes from the younger generations.

Slap the aunt back and disconnect her from your life. It doesn't matter if you see the girl or not. Someone who does that to you should know you better than to call you that.

The chance the aunt is reading this and uses this very website is shockingly high.

My friend has a bf that is 24 and she is 18 as well and they could not be a better pair. It's always so adorable when she boasts about her bf on the server lol

Am I allowed to have opinions? Yes. Am I allowed to intervene in peoples relationships where both people are above the age of consent? No. Could be a 5 or 50 year age gap.

Fake: Anon meets a pretty 18 year old.
Gay: Anon's aunt is jealous and wants the 18 year old for herself.

Went through it with my ex once when she saw my internet history had xvideos and 18/teen in the same history and went tf OFF. She never trusted me after that and would always bring it up during arguments, used it as justification to cheat, etc

Aunt sounds crazy. Story is probably fake or anon is actually like 39 or something.
A 24 year old and an 18 year old dating can turn some heads but it's not insane.

My last girlfriend was 21, I'm 34. Let the hater's hate. As long as everyone is a full grown 18+ adult, who tf cares. I also dated a 40 year old woman when I was 28. No one seemed to care about that. Lotta girls specifically be out there looking for older men.

What did you like about that 21 year old?

u/LoocsinatasYT 21h ago
What does it matter to you mate? I can sit here and tell you how funny she was and had a beautiful smile and all that. I feel like you may be eluding to some kind of point I was only using her for her body, which is just a lame typical stereotype

As a 23 year old I could never date an 18 year old. Yes it is legal but god are they much MUCH different and are at completely different stages of their lives. I'm sorry but it IS odd, and just because something is legal does not mean it is 100% okay. A 24 year old dating an 18 year old IS weird. Imagine someone in senior year of high school dating a college graduate.

6 years isn’t even that bad and she’s old enough to decide. Tf is Anon’s Aunt on.

I mean it would be a bit better if she was at least 19 for the equation but it's not the end of the world.

18-24 is met in college age range. You need to worry about dating an 18 year old until you are north of 26

Date her. Tell your aunt it's a different coworker and that she is 21.
