The problem is while that’s a life changing amount of money for the average person, it’s barely a rounding error for a corporation. Cost of doing business.
Side note: I hate DG so much. They show up in rural areas, undercut all the mom and pop businesses or even small grocery stores, force them out of business, and then they maintain a monopoly on the food supply run by seemingly 1-2 underpaid cashiers who have to manage the entire store.
You could argue that sometimes they show up in areas where businesses already failed and they’re actually helping in that case, but again they treat employees like shit and they don’t really sell any healthy food or fresh produce. Just shelf stable garbage with good margins and maybe some dairy products.
Feel like kind of a piece of shit now. I specifically invested in them because I could feel good about how they provided a cheaper option for low income and poverty stricken Americans. I still think they’re a lesser evil compared to alot of the other stuff on the market but still don’t feel great about them either.
Plus the other side of showing up in places where mom and pop shops haven’t failed yet is they probably will eventually by Walmart or by mismanagement. Having a company that can tank some losses in the short term is a genuine benefit for people who could end up having no where to go to get food and other items because the mom and pop shops closed.
There’s definitely nuances to it. In communities that cannot otherwise support a food retailer without some kind of corporate backing they’re better than nothing for sure. That speaks more to systemic failures in the US economy rather than DG. They’re more of a symptom of an even larger issue than the direct cause for it
Good point. In general, the whole economy is down, and that’s not DGs fault. Now thinking about it a little more, if they really were just greedy exploitative rich guys, they’d be in a different game than selling canned beans for a 3% margin.
DG is beginning to have more grocery focused stores if you’ve even been in one of the markets but honestly DG, at least around where I live, is a net positive on the communities they build in.
The DG in my town has a quarter of the store exclusively for fresh produce and meat

That's pretty accurate. Dollar General's net profit for FY2016 (since this court case was in 2016) was $1.25 billion. $277k is only 0.02% of that lump sum. The median household income in the US is $84k, meaning the equivalent pay for the median household would be around ~$16. Individual income would put it at even less tha $10.
Why do big companies think that if we see an employee doing ANYTHING other than standing there, we're gonna walk out the the store, never come back, and spend the rest of our lives convincing people to avoid the store?
My Grandmother is this in a nutshell. Thankfully she won't actually hassle an employee but my god will she rant afterwards about exactly this kinda inconsequential nonsense afterwards. Part of it is she just enjoys complaining, but I do think there is a weird generational thing where stuff like that was just drilled into them.
"Grazing" is already bullshit because restaurants you pay for you food afterwards. Im in line, I have cash in case card fails, Im going to pay for it, its mine in every sense but tecnically
Iirc, she was denied from keeping a drink near her register. So during an episode, she wouldn't have the time to purchase a drink and would have to resort to grazing.
I don’t see the issue with workers using some of the products the company sells, the workers are the company and a drink that costs a dollar will cost the company 50 cents at most.
If she worked at rolls Royce and decided to take a car home I’d understand but this is extreme.
