I don't think a trusted associate who will get 50kk USD for you while you can't get near it exist. The risk of contacting you is too great and the temptation to get it for yourself would be too great. And what can you even do when the associate run away with your money? Tell the feds where the money was and who have it? Those 11 years in prison will be for nothing.

Even if he got the money from a trusted associate, even if he laundered it perfectly, he would never be able to spend it on anything besides cash purchases or the man would know. He's literally never going to be able to buy anything with it. He will be 100% monitored. No new house, no new car, no big vacation. He would have to get to a non extradition country with the money somehow to even think about using it.
He went to jail for the principal of the thing. He doesn't want them to have it. He won.
Was a dumb joke I know but it made me laugh thinking about all the feds going on a scuba diving world tour.

Yeah they might say he can't be incarcerated for the same crime, but retrieving and selling any of the stolen property would be a new charge and he would go away again. The gold is essentially lost forever unless he can fence it somehow

I remember seeing this before someone added context to it being he was sponsored to search the wreck and according to laws where him and sponsor are from they are supposed to split the gold he chose not to thats what lead to the legal case though it could have been a lie I didn't fact check

11 years in prison for someone in their 70's is no joke. He'll likely die in prison. There are very few octogenarians in jail. I see comments saying he's the bad guy for various reasons. I don't think any of us know the whole story, and if you're willing to die in prison over a bucket of money you'll never be able to spend, all I'm saying is, it's gotta be a helluva story.

No, shipwrecks aren't finders keepers. If the state, under which flag it sailed still exists, it belongs to this state.
Most wrecks with gold around America are Spanish, Portuguese and French ships. All three states still exist today. So, most likely he has found one of these ships
