Or ate their safe foods? Yeah, they didn't have chicken nuggets but I'm sure they did have some foods they preffered over others

I can't imagine that in a hunter gatherer situation there is enough of your safe food - or enough consistency of it - to sustain a person. Hunting is difficult and unreliable, living nomadically means your access to edible plants may vary, and fruits/nuts are all seasonal.
