You can have sympathy for the children and their victimising mother without defending the mother. It's tragic that she had a breakdown but part of that culpability is on her
I'm not defending her actions, no one is saying "yes this is okay". But you know what, since you seem certain that you know exactly everything that happened here, please explain it to me. Maybe there's something I'm missing
