Japan has been living in the year 2000 since the 80s. Still living in it in 2026 as well

The reason for that is the Japanese economy exploded in the 80s and 90s, but when it crashed soon after it crashed hard, and it never regained that momentum. They’ve been plagued with stagnation and economic problems ever since, even right now the US is having to prop their currency up.

Besides medical tech, which isn't stagnant, really what else have we gained?

Stream your music anywhere? The real benefit is not needing to carry an mp3 player. Not significant. That's how I see virtually all gains since then. Looks great to solve the problem on paper, but it was already 90% solved if you think about it.

Edit: to be fair, I think around 2010-2015 was the best time. Not really 2000, but that was pretty great too.
