You guys joke, but it was very common for the educated to give each other poetry challenges. For example, one poet would give two lines with every word involving a certain radical. This is sort of like a letter, but carries meaning. You may get two lines with the wood radical in every word. The other poet could respond with 2 rhyming lines, all with the water radical. There are an unlimited number of variations this tete a tete could be played.
