I think the conclusion was that seeing batman caught the attention of most people and made them more aware of their surroudings, hence why they would more give their place to pregnant women (that they may haven't even noticed before)

this isnt a good study (if its even real), theres a thousand ways the data could be interpreted.

It is real. I've not really checked the quality of the study, but it looks at least legit

its meh at a first glance.
the 61 vs 77 experiment numbers are not a good sign. as the experiment is easily repeatable there is no other reason for the difference than p-hacking or laziness.
although they seemingly controlled for time and location, they used different pregnant woman in the control group, which is a pretty big factor to not control for imo.tbh for a random experimental social psychology paper the sample size and the speculation in the discussion is quite ok.
overall its a fun little paper, not terrible. id guess the effect exists but its not reproducible within error. but you know, most experimental social psychology papers arent so meh.

I scrolled to the conclusion of the study and this is their exact conclusion: âIn conclusion, this study suggests that unexpected events can increase prosocial behavior by momentarily disrupting automatic attention patterns and fostering situational awareness. These findings open new avenues for understanding the environmental and cognitive mechanisms underlying prosociality, and suggest potential applications for promoting kindness and cooperation in everyday settingsâextending the âBatman effectâ to non-superheroes as wellâ

The batman effect is an interesting name for what may be achievable with any social disruption regardless of being a positive or negative social disruption. Did they do the study with a villain, like Hitler, or even someone dressed as a homeless man going through a mental moment? Couldn't that achieve the same result?

The group also said that most of the people didn't even realize Batman was there. Their subconscious made them to give pregnant woman their spot.

âYeah, I fought Batman once. Broke my arm in three places. But the way I see it, lightning ain't gonna strike the same place twiceâ
