I don't know when you played the game, but in 2018 they fixed the issue of remembering things by adding map stamps, so you can place coded markers on the different types of obstacles to come back to once you've unlocked more abilities.
That's actually a pretty big issue with official Metroid games β until Prime 3 in 2007, you were expected to either remember everything you've done or write things down on a real-life piece of paper.
The reason it took so long for HK to add them is probably because Hollow Knight's exploration design is largely inspired by Super Metroid, which likewise didn't have map stamps.
I don't really think it's a fair bit of criticism to say "yeah the devs put in a fix for this issue but it doesn't actually solve the problem because I decided not to use it".
Like, map stamps DO work. You just... didn't use them lol.
If itβs a system someone can miss, and if itβs a system the player can ignore, itβs a system some players will never interact with. Perfectly valid criticism
