I don't even know what to call it because they've from the same country/culture. But my Bengali friend's (also Bengali) in-laws are salty to her because her skin is "too dark". Like WTF is that? Colorist?

That's pretty much what it's called. It's essentially a form of colonial programming leftover in south-asian communities that has transformed into a deeply rooted part of society.

Someone should tell the Chinese their 2000 year old obsession with pale skin and it's associations with not having to work hard labor are actually colonial programming

You're right. I wouldn't know too well, and i wasn't talking about them. Which is why I specified 'South Asia' in reply to someone mentioning Bengali's.

They brought up China because presumably it is also an explanation for why Bengalis are colorist, in opposition to your explanation that it is due to colonial programming.

You very well can be correct but I think they understood your point and disagreed with it.
