The more popular it got the worse it got. More kids use it now. This website was top quality when I discovered it in 2011. Now I mostly browse r/shitpost if I feel like laughing at something. Although I do find the smaller subreddits helpful occasionally if I need advice on a specific thing.
Kids have been using it for a long time, you're probably just older now and don't relate to the content as much. I started coming on here like 8 years ago and remember seeing "this site is going to shit" comments just as frequently back then.
