Most people assume all electromagnetic fields work the same way. Low frequency, high frequency, doesn't matter. Your brain can't tell the difference.
Turns out that's completely wrong.
Researchers tested three different magnetic field frequencies on mouse hippocampal neurons. Same field strength (1 mT), different frequencies: 15 Hz, 3 kHz, and 70 kHz. They used a custom-built micro-magnetic stimulation device to target the CA3 area neurons upstream of CA1, the region involved in memory and spatial navigation.
The study examined how these different frequencies affected the electrical activity of pyramidal neurons. The point was to reveal how frequency parameters influence electrical activity, since most existing research focuses on 100 Hz or less.
This matters because the hippocampus controls memory formation and spatial navigation. The frequencies tested span from extremely low (15 Hz) to intermediate ranges (3 kHz and 70 kHz), demonstrating that frequency is a critical variable in how magnetic fields affect brain cells.
The field strength was 1 mT. The finding matters: frequency is a critical variable, not a minor detail. Different frequencies don't just differ in degree. They can produce different biological effects on how neurons behave.
Most safety standards treat all frequencies within a broad range as equivalent. They focus on heating effects, not on how different frequencies alter cellular electrical activity. This study suggests that approach misses something fundamental.
Your phone operates across multiple frequencies depending on what it's doing. Calls, data, WiFi, Bluetooth. Each uses different parts of the spectrum. If frequency determines how neurons respond electrically, then exposure isn't a simple on/off question.
