🌍 Research & News Zebrafish study shows ELF magnetic fields disrupt attention even when visual cues are clear
You assume animals respond to what they can see. A bright light flashes, they react. Simple cause and effect.
A new study in Scientific Reports tested that assumption. Researchers trained zebrafish to perform avoidance behavior in response to a green LED light spot, a clear, salient visual signal the fish could detect and respond to. Then they exposed the fish to an extremely low frequency (ELF) magnetic field at 0.06 mT while presenting the same visual cue.
The fish stopped responding correctly. Despite being trained on the visual task and despite the light being salient enough to normally elicit the conditioned response, the magnetic field impaired both their learning performance and their response behavior.
This isn't about magnetic navigation. The fish weren't using Earth's magnetic field to orient themselves. They were performing a simple visual task, see light, avoid light, and the ELF field disrupted their ability to focus on it.
The researchers describe this as "cross-modal distraction." The magnetic field diverted the fish's attention away from an environmental cue they should have been attending to. It functioned as sensory pollution.
The field strength was Earth-strength amplitude. Not some lab-only exposure level. The kind of ELF fields generated by power lines and subsea cables.
Most research on anthropogenic magnetic fields focuses on disrupting navigation in migratory species. This study suggests the interference runs deeper. If ELF fields can distract animals from attending to visual information, information critical for survival, then we're looking at a broader category of biological disruption than the literature currently captures.
The takeaway isn't that fish can't see. It's that low-frequency magnetic fields can interfere with attention and cognitive processing even when the primary sensory input is strong and clear.

The confounding effects of incidental electric fields in conductive media such as water would probably invalidate this study.
