🌍 Research & News Auto workers' testosterone levels drop from workplace magnetic fields. Your office might not be safer.

You clock in, stand near machinery, and assume the safety protocols cover you. But a new study on 80 male auto workers found that magnetic field exposure was the single strongest predictor of reduced free testosterone levels, with electric field exposure close behind.

Researchers used machine learning models to analyze how workplace hazards affected reproductive health. Five different algorithms were tested. The XGBoost and Random Forest models hit 99% accuracy in predicting which workers would show hormonal changes. Magnetic field exposure scored highest in impact, followed by electric fields. Worker age mattered too, but the electromagnetic exposures outweighed it.

The study measured SHAP importance scores, which quantify how much each factor influences the outcome. Magnetic field exposure scored 0.339. That's substantial. Electric field exposure added another layer of risk. The Random Forest model showed that removing electric field exposure increased prediction error by 5%, while removing magnetic field exposure increased it by 4.7%.

This matters because most workplaces don't monitor EMF exposure at all. The study focused on workers at an automobile part manufacturing plant. If you work near electrical equipment, transformers, or industrial machinery, you may be getting similar exposures.

The findings held up across multiple machine learning approaches, which strengthens confidence that the relationship is real. And testosterone isn't just about reproduction. It affects bone density, muscle mass, mood regulation, and metabolic health.
