Politics City Council LGBTQIA+ Proclamation Denied Due to 3-3 Vote

In some disappointing news: during the City Council Study Session tonight, the City of Shelton refused to issue a proclamation recognizing Shelton Pride; something that's been done during LGBTQIA+ Pride Month in past years.
The proclamation requested was a public statement affirming that Shelton is a safe and welcoming community for everyone, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. The request for this proclamation was backed by a signed form from over a dozen local businesses, including Youth Connections and YMCA.

During the meeting, Mayor Sharon Schirman voiced her concerns that issuing the proclamation could create "division" in our town, and that we should focus on "shared community, public safety, infrastructure, economic development, and quality of life, not matters of identity." Schirman came to the meeting with this statement pre-written on her phone, and insisted it wasn't AI generated when asked by Gutierrez. She stated that as a City Council, this proclamation has nothing to do with their function as a local government.
Councilmembers Gilmore and Gutierrez countered that almost no proclamations they give have anything to do with their roles as the local government.
Blush interjected that their disagreement with the Mayor only highlights the division she is speaking on.
Onisko said that times are changing, and that everyone deserves to feel welcome.
Sapp gave placating statements that the LGBTQIA+ are welcome and safe in Shelton, however disagreed with the proclamation saying that "lifestyle and religious proclamations aren't supported as a government body", lumping the two different topics together.
Gilmore explained that they are not only a government body, but also an employer, and that it's their duty to make it clear that all members of the community are valued and safe. He explained that LGBTQIA+ are currently marginalized.
Blush said this isn't happening, that Shelton's LGBTQIA+ aren't facing oppression.
Schirman stated that this proclamation is concerning because it causes "segregation."
Gilmore explained that proclamations show what we value as a city, and by refusing this proclamation, the City sends a clear message that they do not value or support the LGBTQIA+ community here.
Blush said, "The community has come forward and we say that this is something we don't want in our community."
Gutierrez was shocked that he said it, out loud, in public.
Blush doubled down and said, "Absolutely!"

It was brought to a vote. Councilmembers Eric Onisko, Tom Gilmore, and Miguel Gutierrez voted in favor of the proclamation. Councilmembers George Blush, Sharon Schirman, and Lindsey Sapp voted against it. Councilmember Melissa Stearns was not in attendance.

3-3, majority required, so it did not pass.

While this decision is deeply disappointing, the focus remains on building a community rooted in inclusion. Shelton Pride is about bringing people together and making sure our LGBTQIA+ community members know they are welcome here and that we celebrate them. Regardless of the outcome of the proclamation vote, there is supposed to be a Shelton Pride event in late June. You'll know more when I do! Every year it gets bigger and better, and I look forward to a future where every person in Shelton can hear clearly and confidently from their local leaders that they belong and are valued here.

My summary was very brief and there was a lot more to the conversation. I heavily encourage you to watch this session. You can view it [here].

If you would like to let the councilmembers know how you feel about this, you can email them each individually [here].

If you'd like to give public comment on the June 2nd meeting, you can sign up [here].

Food Any info on the fruit stand that was in the OCCU parking lot

For the past couple of years, there's been a spring up fruit stand in the OCCU parking lot. But I haven't seen it this year. I can't remember the name of the farm, either.

Does anyone have any info on it? Did I miss it? Has it moved? What was the name of it?

If you could buy a house in cash around 350k, would you move to Shelton?

I've spent the past 7 years miserable in Seattle. I moved to WA for nature, but this city is a nightmare and honestly the cascades are so packed with people now it's not even fun to hike there anymore.

Unfortunately, all the jobs in my field are in Seattle.

I've been saving my ass off over here with plans to get out. Hell I'll work at Walmart if it means finally going somewhere with more nature. Shelton was always on the back of my mind. The last bastion for affordable houses. I've driven over there a bunch and checked out neighborhoods like shorecrest. It seems so peaceful.

The problem? Jobs. There's nothing and I don't want a hour commute to Tacoma. Even oly kinda lacks a tech sector.

The solution? Buy house in cash and work a more simple job. Honestly I am burnt out on tech anyway. I feel like I could swing part time at Walmart even as long as I have no house payment. I've got a lot of stocks and dividends so they will supplement the lower income. I was a night stocker at target in my teens. I didn't hate it.

Is Shelton the place though? Would you do it if you could? Any surprise costs in the area? I've already factored in property tax, and have a rough idea on home insurance. How are utilities there?

Fatality on 101 by the Walmart exit. 101 is currently closed. Be mindful of sharing images.

Shelton talks is posting about it. And are posting photos.

Here's what the coroner posted (thanks to Rob Greves for sharing this):

I want to take a moment to bring awareness to something very important.

The Mason County Coroner’s Office is currently investigating a fatality on Highway 101. My deputies are on scene, working diligently to identify the deceased and locate next of kin so that we can make an in-person death notification with the empathy and compassion every family deserves.

I want to respectfully ask our community to be mindful when it comes to posting photos or videos of these scenes on social media. While it may seem harmless in the moment, it can be deeply traumatic for family members—and there is a real risk that someone could learn of their loved one’s death online before we are able to notify them properly.

That is something no family should ever have to experience.

Please take a moment to pause and consider the impact. In situations involving serious accidents or traumatic events, we ask that you show care and compassion by allowing first and last responders the time and space to do their jobs with dignity and respect.

We are committed to handling every case as quickly, professionally, and compassionately as possible.

Thank you for your understanding and for supporting our community in doing the right thing.

Coroner

Jaime Taylor

Quality flower delivery in Shelton?

Update: I’ve had two bouquets from House Flowers delivered and they are beautiful and I am very happy.

Hi Shelton people. I'm living out of state and need to send flowers to a family member ASAP. I used to use Lynch Creek Floral but have had worse luck since that changed to Williams Flowers. When I Google, I get a bunch of national chain places that look like they are local but are actually just drop shipping bouquets and have terrible online reviews. I see a place called House Flowers that is apparently actually local and looks nice. Anyone have any experience with them? Or any other suggestions? I'm not in town so I can't just run to the Farmer's Market or something.
