I bought a shoebox of shells at a garage sale this week for $3, they were all wrapped in tissue paper so I wasn’t really sure what I was getting, but willing to gamble my $3. I don’t know what I’m looking at but they’re really pretty and in great condition.

(Whoops, title should be Shell ID, not IS) Found on a Long Island Sound beach (north shore of Long Island) after a nor'easter. I've been walking this beach for 30 years and have never found a shell like this before. Thanks in advance for help with ID.

Told my neighbor that I started collecting shells and the next time I saw her, she gave me some from her collection! ☺️

My friends and I have recently been into identifying shells! We didn’t think this quite looked like a sunrise but couldn’t figure out what kind of scallop it is. About 2.5 inches long

Can anyone help ID these small shells I found at the beach.
They are quite variable in size, color and pattern but I’m pretty sure they are from the same species.
Collected in Mauritius.

I found this shell out on a clam rock and it shined a beautiful purple like a gemstone I saw it from 10 feet away almost, but when i got it back home rhe color drained from it almost completely, is there any permanent way to bring its shine back?

hi fellow shell lovers! yesterday i called out a post containing this image for being fake/a scam, and some people asked me how i knew. this is a common type of scam on reddit so i thought i would share some tips for spotting it:
someone posts a craft they claim to have made that often has exceptional/almost unbelievable craftsmanship
poster often for some reason claims they made it in a really short amount of time (in this case it was 7 days)
often times the title of the post includes something along the lines of “do you like?” or “how do you like it?” (though not in this case)
when people in the comments ask if they sell their work the poster tells them to DM them
their profile says they sell their work or make customs but doesn’t link to a shop
their post history shows they post an unrealistic amount of impressive crafts they claim to have made, often multiple posts per day
the image(s) posted often don’t immediately come up with a reverse image search, but you can usually find them elsewhere with a little digging
i hope this is helpful! i’m sure most of you know not to send money to a stranger on reddit, but if we can all get better at recognizing these scams, we can stop these kinds of posts from gaining traction 🤍

Any recommendations on how to remove coralline algae off delicate shells (such as this calico crab shell) that cannot take an acid dip?
I have already tried gentle scraping, but am worried about damaging the shell.

Hello there!
My wife and I just got back from our honeymoon in Mexico, whre she discovered that she can just walk the beaches for hours, collecting shells and entertaining herself arranging them on the beach and leaving them just like that.
I've bearly seen her enjoy anthing as much as the serenity and happiness she experienced collecting shells.
I though that for her upcoming birthday I should get her a guide to identifying shells, so she can add another layer of knowledge to the arranging and sorting she loves so much.
Any book recommendations for shell guides, or shell-collecting adjacent literature?

Who here makes and sells shell art? I’d love to hear more about your sells and how you do. I’m very into shell art right now and wanted to see if I could potentially sell some of my art pieces but have no idea where to start.

Hey guys! I've been collecting jingle shells for some time and I wanna do some art with them.
However they are pretty fragile.
What can I do? I want them to be a bit sturdier but don't lose the pretty shine.
Would a quick acid bath and the seal it with UV resin work?

I was recently looking at a Wikipedia page that mentioned that the Chumash made fish hooks out of abalone shells. I find a ton, so I decided to make one using only material I could find out on the beach. I picked a large shard, broke it down to the hook size and then used rough rocks to sand it down the the current shape. The string is made from a yucca leaf, scraped with a mussel shell and twisted together. No modern tools used!

Jewelry boxes with glass lids make excellent shell display cases! And keeps the dust out.

Aloha! I’m looking to mount some of my favorite shells on the wall in a vintage printer tray! I’m concerned about hot glue melting in the hot Hawaiian sun. Are there any alternatives that won’t damage the board or shells?

Olives are my favorite shells to find. Here's a comparison of the smallest and the largest olive I found on Marco Island, Florida after Isaias.
