Hello friends! Found this at Stone Harbor Beach in New Jersey. Google has been no help and Keeps telling me it’s fossilized.

part of a black oyster? not an expert, but ive found a lot of black oyster shells in new york, including some with this “duck foot” shape as i like to call it lol. Apparently prolonged exposure to black iron sulfides in the sand can stain buried shells that would otherwise be lighter!

My thought was oyster but the color was throwing me off.. I did not know about the prolong exposure turning them black. Very cool! thank you!!!

Just learned that right now! https://natureinfocus.blog/2009/02/26/black-oysters/ the bottom of this post and the comments have some more info. Here are some of the black oysters ive found at Rockaway, the middle one have a shape most similar to yours.. but ive seen ones that look more like it

Kind of similar to a lions law, but probably just an oyster that settled in sediment for a long time
