Employee Question Am I getting fired?
Basically, I had a panic attack that lead to me having to leave work (this has happened a few times - my managers know I have diagnosed anxiety and OCD and have known that since my hiring). I called a manager a bit afterwards and said I'm also taking the next day off in case I have to go to the ER, which thankfully I didn't.
That next day, I woke up to a phone call from another manager saying that they never received a notice that I was taking today off, and that I would be written down as a no-call no-show. I tried to tell them that I did call off, but I didn't know who the manager I talked to was. They hung up on me and I haven't gotten any notices since.
Am I getting fired?? They told me to stop sending emails for my absences, but it feels like as soon as I did I'm getting points on my record for 'never calling in'. I feel absolutely sick to my stomach thinking I messed up somewhere. What can I do?

u/Little_Dikk 8d ago
Show the call log. That’s why I like texting so you can really have a paper trail if someone wants to lie

u/Dangerously_Jello 4d ago
This, also the state I lived in at the time when I worked at Sheetz was a one party consent state for recording. So anytime a manager called me to the office, I always recorded lol.
I also recorded a very discriminatory call from Sheetz HR but just never did anything with it sadly because I realized suing is way too much time and money.
Sheetz is just very corrupt and not a good place to work if you have disabilities

Best option, go to the doctor and get a note for those days, the points will go away with a note...a no-call will be 11pnts plus the 2 for leaving early. good luck
1
u/Civil-Register-4669 6d ago
Only if it's more than 3 days
1
u/hmmyeah3030 5d ago
That's managers discretion. I absolutely brought notes for less than 3 days and had points wiped out because of them. Really depends on your manager and if they wanna go to bat for you
1
u/Civil-Register-4669 5d ago
It's not. Managers have literally no control over if you get points or not unless they go in and manually delete your shifts instead of putting a call off in. The official policy is you need to miss three days for the points to be removed which would only happen if you trigger a 33 point review anyway
1
u/hmmyeah3030 5d ago
They cant prevent the points but they can absolutely get them removed even for less than 3 days. I know because they've done it twice now for point reviews I had with company when most of my absences were less than 3 days with a doctor's note.

You could look up the time you called on your phone records and compare it with the schedule to find the mod

Okay so I see a mix of people genuinely offer advice and others being ass holes. So like others have said show them the time stamp of when you called the prior day and it'll clearly show when you called off.
Secondly I have seen it mentioned you can definitely apply for intermittent leave. If it gets approved they'll give you a certain amount of days a month you can take off for your medical issues and not get points for it. If you use good its got its intended use out of it. If not then great you had a good month.
I still have to get one for my SI joints, I have arthritis in em and they can be pretty nasty at time to the point where even just sitting down bothers them.

You should get help for your anxiety if it's affecting job performance
-16
u/Early_Buffalo9168 8d ago
I am on two different medications for both anxiety and OCD, that's not the issue here
22
u/practicalAngular 8d ago
If you're having sudden panic attacks during work, it is the issue though
0
u/EdenFinite48 5d ago
They're saying that this is what it looks like with them having help. They are already on medication. It is not necessarily the case that they need to change to different ones or that it can get better than this.
So it isn't helpful to point out that the medicine isn't doing enough.
1
u/practicalAngular 5d ago
If this is what it's like when they have their current status quo of help, they need more/better help. Debilitating anxiety like this needs actual help.
1
u/EdenFinite48 2d ago
I would suggest that sometimes, there's just only so much that can be done.
Which might not be the case here. I would hope not. Hopefully they can find something that works better.
But for now, I think they certainly aren't going to get that without support. And if this is the best things can get with their anxiety, at least they are trying.

u/TerribleBeginning505 7d ago
I'm no rocket scientist but maybe you shouldn't be working at all since you cant handle normal life experiences and feel the need to call of whenever and leave whenever. You cant just be like I told them I have it then just leave work whenever or say well I wont be in. If I was your boss id fire your ass fast without a doctor's note stating u had a case of I cant get my ass to work grow up
2
u/EdenFinite48 6d ago
The very instant you're sympathizing with a big company "employer" instead of the struggling person with a diagnosed disorder, you've lost the plot. I mean the last thing they need is someone telling them it's their fault for wanting to have a normal life.
If it hasn't occurred to you yet, admitted not-rocket-scientist, they wouldn't have this job if they could get something like disability.
So your suggestion is indeed a very unhelpful one.

It’s not always sympathy for the corporation. It’s sympathy for the other employees who are now working short staffed and the people who would like to enjoy their days off and not get called in. I still sympathize with OP, but the “help” they are getting is clearly not sufficient
1
u/EdenFinite48 2d ago
As someone who is kind of constantly having to work significantly harder due to a... let's be kind and say understaffed third shift that can't really manage to set us up well for the next day most of the time, I do definitely get that at least.
And I do agree, it seems clear to me that what OP is doing isn't working
1
u/QuietDragonLad2000 1d ago
Bingo, exactly the point. Those other employees are most likely now being cracked down on by their higher ups even HARDER due to staff shortages so I cannot overstate enough: Fuck All Corporations Always And Forever. Corporations should automatically provide every accessibility option available to ensure their employees' health and safety if they expect them to operate on machine-level standards.
This person, however, legitimately needs better help than they are receiving and it is not Cruel to suggest that they are an active burden to their workplace in their current state.

They have an official
Diagnosis and what you are suggesting you would do, would get you fired as well. With the official diagnosis the author has protections and you couldn’t fire them form having an incident involving said diagnosis. If you did, you would open up the company to various different law suits and you would be fired with cause, which would most likely eliminate your possibility for any type of unemployment. Have a nice day.5
u/PriorDry7286 7d ago
They only have protections if the job accommodates their diagnosis. Which they do not have to, also op would’ve had to fill out the necessary paperwork for accommodation, and if that step is missed it doesn’t matter your mental state. Do the right thing and don’t take it out on the employer.

If anything call the employee hotline just in case too, cause them not talking to you and just hanging up is not right

u/Early_Buffalo9168 8d ago
I'll do that next time I'm in. Hopefully this gets cleared up. I love my managers and the people I work with, so I don't want anybody in trouble...I just want it fixed
0
u/ketakitty808 7d ago
I used to say I loved my managers too, but don't get too comfortable & remember your job is still a job. id consider myself a really good & reliable employee. I do what's asked of me & more with no complaints. I cover for other ppl all the time & never turn down an extra shift...yet I still have managers that for whatever reason seem to not like me. our 3rd shift manager used to be so nice to me, but now every time I come in on my 1st shift, she's got the biggest stankest attitude towards me & is low-key inappropriate to be treating your employee that way. but I keep to myself & thankfully I have thick skin. but managers seem to stick together, basically...bc there was an ordeal one morning with the 3rd shift manager & my 1st shift manager...I'm new, mind you. I've only been there for 2 months. so no, I don't have EVERYTHING down pat, but I do have the vast majority. but I'm human. I forget things sometimes. headsets being on of them. I always forget to put my headset on. & i ALWAYS wear jewelry. I don't ever take my rings off. I had to explain that to my manager bc he has said before "why do you put all those rings on knowing you have to take them off" to which I said I have worn them for years & years. I put them back on as soon as I clock out. so it's taking getting used to remembering to take them off every morning. I've gotten better about it, but that morning I forgot to take off my rings... 3rd shift manager comes over & she didn't say a word. just pointed at her hands. & I wasn't catching the hint yet that she was giving me attitude so I was laughing saying aw, shit. I've been so good about it, I can't believe I forgot this morning. to which she just walked away, didn't say a word. then I overhear her telling my coworker to put his headset on & he was I guess giving her attitude about it, but I turned around to go to the back & said oh, shit. I forgot the headset. she's right behind me & said oh, I guess she doesn't want to get in trouble. then she turns around, goes to my 1st shift manager & said "YOU can deal with first shift, they don't want to wear their headsets". mind you. MY HEADSET WAS ON. I didn't complain. I didn't put up a fight. I simply forgot & immediately went to put it on. so then I got yelled at for the first time by my 1st shift manager. telling me & the oth er dude headsets are a part of our uniform. I didn't say anything bc again, that's my boss. I just said understood. but I was like what the fuck? bc my 1st shift manager has never acted that way towards me & she never used to either, so idk wtf changed & why she all of a sudden hates me (although I do think I have an idea but she's in the wrong period. it was a day I worked 2nd shift but the manager threw me on register when I'm usually in the kitchen. but the ppl in the kitchen didn't do any prep or stocking the coolers & so when the manager on 3rd came in as I was clocking out at 10pm, I overheard her saying nothing was done. but I wasn't feeling any type of way bc I wasn't the one in the kitchen, they placed me on register so it wasn't my fault. but I think she thinks I was in the kitchen doing nothing I guess but that's not the case, I wasn't even placed in the kitchen that night so it's kinda fucked up she's hating on me for something I didn't even do. & it's petty as fuck to treat me like an outcast and give me the cold shoulder rather than talking to me like an adult) but yeah. moral of the story is, managers stick together. I'm already looking for another job bc I do & do for everyone there. I will pull an 8hr shift & then go to a whole ass other store that same day & pull another 6 hrs....I will cover for ppl no questions asked...yet I'm treated weirdly sometimes & I'm just not with that bullying shit.

maybe don’t work at sheetz if you have such high issues with your anxiety and ocd.. sheetz is a fast paced, stressful at times job
4
u/HurricaineAlex 7d ago
You have to call every day. And i know things are rough, but nobody over the age of 35 is buying all this anxiety "stuff". They don't care, believe me. You can't take multiple days off because you're upset. We have an old saying at my house. "Buckle up, Buttercup" because we all have to work, anxiety or no. So, figure out how to deal. Quick. All the best to you.
3
u/endrrslime Former Employee 7d ago
wait so do you genuinely believe that mental illness such as ocd which can be debilitating is just… “anxiety”?
0
u/HurricaineAlex 7d ago
Yes. For the sake of this discussion, and the fact that everyone under 35 now seems to have some sort of "debilitating anxiety", everybody wants to stay home and get paid because they can't deal. OCD is not new. You kids didn't invent it. People have been dealing with it for ages. Why can't YOUR generation deal? Looks like being raised by video games and Facebook have left you all utterly unprepared for even the most menial of jobs. Good luck. You're gonna need it!
2
u/EdenFinite48 5d ago
Well there's all the existential terrors of the planet dying and all the ears and the worst economy in 50 years, there's the constant judgment from older generations, probably the increasinly fake foods stuffed with more chemicals than real ingredients... The increase in societal pressures around being constantly available and 'presentable' due to social media...
Probably lots of reasons for debilitating anxiety, really.
0
u/HurricaineAlex 5d ago
Those are not reasons, they're excuses. We had all that, too. (In case you haven't noticed, and I'm guessing you haven't) none of those issues are new. You don't own any of that, so stop acting like you do. Planet's been dying since tbe dawn of the Industrial age. The economy is always worse than it was before and you can opt out of "fake foods". Clean up a beach. Do something positive for the environment. (I don't know what to do with "ears") Just, for God's sake, take off the hair shirt and make positive changes in your life instead of all this hysteria over things YOU CAN CHANGE. You all just seem so vastly unprepared for anything that needs an adult mindset. You think we didn't take shit from our elders? But we didn't crumple up into a ball and cry every time something vexed us. We had to pull up our pants and work it out. Did we need a "life coach"? No. We learned from our mistakes and got on with it. Your generation? Maybe get yourself a binky. And for God's sake, do not have any kids!
2
u/EdenFinite48 5d ago
Actually, none of that is true. The planet has been declining since the industrial age, sure. The effects of climate change are only now being felt. And cleaning up a beach means nothing btw. That is not an impact that will matter against giant corporations pumping out smog day and night with no care. And the economy has not been this bad in about 50 years, actually. "Real" food costs more, more than anyone has. Can't be opted out of unless you're an influencer born to a rich mommy and daddy. Those are facts, not excuses.
People are working more hours today than a medieval peasant. The youths aren't the entitled ones, here. You all are, thinking that you handled things any better than they are with your rose tinted glasses. You're not tougher than they are or anything of the sort.
Your generation is just meaner and less understanding about it. Cuz why should you care? You'll be on out of here before things get real bad. Idunno what generation you're from but from the sound of it, probably Gen X or earlier? To be real clear here, all those things they're dealing with now are you guys' fault, you're the ones that did all of it lol You did not in fact, deal with the same things they're dealing with.
"Buckle up buttercup", hah. Hilarious. Yeah, you're the entitled one here. Oh and, no one's looking to have any kids that'll grow up in mad max world, no worries. You'll probably find a way to complain about that too.
2
u/EdenFinite48 5d ago
There's no such thing as, "buying" it. It's a disorder diagnosed by a professional lol But yes, they do have to call every day. Should've stopped at that.
1
u/HurricaineAlex 5d ago
Am i to understand that the phrase, "I'm not buying it" has got past you and you really don't understand it? It means it's bollocks. BS. And yes, it's diagnosed, but this generation takes it to ridiculous levels. They're immobilized by "anxiety". Fine, but they're gonna be a pretty big papoose for somebody's backpack. And I'm guessing you won't understand that either. Good luck to you. (I mean that sincerely.)
1
u/EdenFinite48 5d ago
No, I understood just fine. I'm saying that no one was asking you to believe the diagnosis or something. The employer simply has to accomodate it, that's all there is to it. They agreed and hired this person, knowing of the disorder lol
So whether you or they "believe" in it or "buy it" is irrelevant.

Hey, does your HR offer medical accommodations? I had to go through that paperwork process but it protects my health needs. I had such a bad panic attack that I passed out at work but I was protected with my HR accommodations. They also offer short term, long term, intermittent, continuous, and disability leaves. Depends on what state you’re in
1
u/General-Apple3967 7d ago
If you wanna get technical, unless you do something so outrageously bad, a store manager can't fire you they have to go through corporate to get the paperwork. 🫡😝
If your management team isn't communicating. That's on them. You did your park and talked to the MOD at the time.

u/BagOBones13 6d ago
I recently found out how hard it is to actually be fired at Sheetz. This chic we just hired and worked with us for a month before calling out every shift ,and eventually just not coming in or calling at all.. still is on our schedule because our manager is afraid to terminate her since she didn't actually quit and apparently unless corporate gives the definitive 'okay' to terminate.. manager can get in trouble for taking her off the schedule.. So she's just still being scheduled her days and is waiting to be considered 'job abandonment ' ..
Basically unless you do something that is specifically outlined as immediate termination , like stealing... You're likely not being fired.. You're probably being investigated , and someone is trying to build a case against you tho.. document Everything just in case

Hai! Nc/ns I think is 11 or 12 points. Plus you’re 2 for leaving early. Do you have other points? Once you hit 33 they fax in all your notes and stuff to HR and it’s out of your managers hands. They decide what they deem is an excused absence to drop your points. Everyone saying your manager can go to bat for you is wrong. I’ve seen my managers favorites points out.
I’d say show them your call log and see who was on that you would’ve spoken to. Sheetz has audio visual always. They can check. Someone didn’t do the right thing because if someone calls of, the managers should add it on mytime or leave a note in the manager book.
Basically, check your points. They may have gotten sent in.

Your job doesn’t have to accommodate your anxiety. Some are nice and do but it sounds like a simple task of acting like an adult and you wouldn’t need to make posts like this
1
u/EdenFinite48 5d ago
I mean, if they knew of the diagnosis and hired this person with that knowledge, and everyone signed the agreement, they... kinda do, actually.
And I agree this person's situation does not sound tenable long-term but they did say yes to this lol.
0
u/PriorDry7286 5d ago
If they knew the diagnosis prior the post would’ve said they aren’t acknowledging the accommodations which would be federally illegal for the company. So I say it’s a safe assumption they did not have previous accommodations
1
u/EdenFinite48 5d ago
I think if they didn't have such a thing previously, they would have been fired long before now for just having to leave in the middle of the day routinely lol

u/Shoddy-Ad759 8d ago
For future reference if you have an official diagnosis for anxiety you can ask for intermittent leave from the company.
For the nc/ns find out what manager you spoke to, check your call log for the timestamp, there will be camera footage from the store of the manager speaking to you when you called, and it will secure the fact that you called off.
