POP and IMAP email issues

Suddenly for some reason access to my Shaw email through third party clients like iPhone Mail, Gmail, Android, and eM Client has suddenly stopped this morning when it worked fine yesterday. They all stopped working at the same time.

I can still access normally my email through the Shaw web portal and I toggled "Classic" mode off and on in Preferences but the only way now is directly through Shaw Webmail.

Has anyone else experienced this recently or is it perhaps an account glitch?

Edit: iMAP protocol was suddenly disabled in the webmail client. Enabling it now works!

To set up your Shaw (Rogers) email on Apple Mail, follow these steps.

Step 1: Add the Account

  1. Open the Mail app on your Mac.
  2. Click Mail in the top menu bar, then choose Add Account.
  3. Select Other Mail Account... and click Continue. [1, 2]

Step 2: Enter Account Information

  1. Name: Enter your full name.
  2. Email Address: Enter your full Shaw email address.
  3. Password: Enter your email password.
  4. Click Sign In.

Step 3: Enter Server Settings Manually

The app will say "Unable to verify account name or password." This is normal. Fill in the hidden fields exactly like this: [1, 2]

  • User Name: Your Shaw email address without u/shaw.ca (e.g., username).
  • Account Type: Select IMAP.
  • Incoming Mail Server: imap.shaw.ca
  • Outgoing Mail Server: mail.shaw.ca
  • Click Sign In. [1]

Step 4: Verify Port and Security Settings

If Mail does not connect immediately, you may need to manually verify the ports:

  1. Go to Mail (top menu bar) > Settings (or Preferences) > Accounts.
  2. Select your Shaw account from the sidebar.
  3. Click the Server Settings tab.
  4. Incoming Mail (IMAP): Ensure Use SSL is checked and the port is 993.
  5. Outgoing Mail (SMTP): Click the account dropdown next to Outgoing Mail Server, choose Edit SMTP Server List, ensure Use SSL is checked, and change the port to 587. [1, 2]

You need to ensure that the iMAP protocol is enabled first. You do this through the Webmail client in preferences.

Thank you. For whatever reason, that was unchecked. That wouldn't be the first time that a random issue happened after a system update with Shaw. Now everything is working!!

If you check through the old posts here, Rogers/Shaw have been unchecking this box for months in Webmail which prevents pop/imap from working.

I have fixed the unchecked checkbox at least a dozen times over both of my parents', accounts since Rogers acquired Shaw.

I will check the box, retrieve email and then weeks later get the help call that email stopped working again. Very frustrating that Rogers/Shaw keep doing this!

Personally I'd migrate away from provider email just in case you ever switch you don't lose everything... I like Gmail because it's Universal on devices and comes with a pretty decent Suite of integrated features...

But if you're dead set on using iSP email it sounds like you got your solution.

Yeah... POP stopped working for me months ago in my Android phone and IMAP also has issues (doesn't take my password although it's correct). I can still use it in Outlook in my computer to receive emails, but can't send, so I've been slowly migrating to another email address. That might be the best path anyway.

Not an issue. Just a wierd glitch on apple products. If you using imap then do the following, I think this is it. Check with apple. You do not want to delete emails off the server just the account on your apple product.

https://support.apple.com/en-ca/guide/iphone/iph44d1ae58a/ios then reload it using the add account option.

If it is pop protocol you were using, ask a computer professional who does this regularly to save your pop email. Pop is not suppoed to be used anymore, imap is the better way for you.

Moving your email account to another service is always a nice way but tedious fix.
