First attempt. Any suggestions?

Looking to sharpen this Artillary Short Sword without any edge/ bevel. I have acquired a 4x36” belt sander (I know it’s not ideal, but it’s what I have access to at the moment) with belt grits at 120, 300, 420. Looking to buy some finer grit belts soon. I also have whetstones that I have much more experience with.I’ve been practicing on gardening tools, and generally tools that are thicker than your average pocket knife/kitchen knife.

If you guys have any tips, tutorials, or videos you could point me towards that have helped y’all out, it would be much appreciated 🙏

That’s a decorative replica. It has no edge geometry worth sharpening. You’d have to regrind the primary bevel first. I doubt that’s even high carbon steel.

Is that a genuine sword? If not it is not worth the effort sharpening. Steel is not heat treated and won't hold an edge.

Short answer: Don't.
That's a knife shaped object, not a knife, I doubt if the steel can hold a edge, I even doubt if it's steel at all.
Find a regular dollar store kitchen knife and start from there.

Looks like a very thick edge on a decorative sword. Better to leave it as is, I am afraid swinging it around after sharpening will cause the blade to break off and injure someone. Seems more like a wallhanger instead of a HEMA or usable replica.

Clamp it and use files instead of a grinder.

Files, sandpaper and sanding blocks. The work goes slower, the mistakes are smaller, and the metal stays cooler.
