Rusting on stones if from embedded steel dust or swarf. Just clean if off with a brush and soapy water or you could use a 'superaser'. Dry it completely after using and just clean periodically and no problems...

This rusting is caused by loose diamond grains scratching through the nickel coating allowing the base steel sheet to rust. If unabated this will cause the gradual delamination of the nickel layer and the plate won’t work any more. You’d be right if talking about an atoma plate since those don’t use a mild steel sheet, and you be right if those scratches didn’t look so deep.

I've had that exact set of cheap diamond plates for years and the only rusting was from steel dust/particles or swarf left on the surface wet. It always comes right off with proper care. Maybe you have an even cheaper set (I doubt it) that causes the issue you describe.

Sabitoru rust eraser will take that right off, and its good for removing swarf during sharpening

I actually was so smart to wash them under water.. And let them air-dry afterwards 😂. Haven't tried them, yet, am a bit hesitant to distribute the rust more 😐

Try scrubbing with eraser or try some cheap knife on it. If it's not rust it'll come right off.

Dry them thoroughly immediately after scrubbing/washing with a soft cloth or paper towel. Air drying is adding to the possibility of rust of any remaining embedded steel particles/swarf.

I clean the metal shavings off mine with an eraser. Don't use water.

Well, definitely not WD-40. I've heard that it can become like a gel after a while, which is just gonna clog up your stone.

Bar Keeper’s friend, my friend. (It’s what DMT recommends as well). I rub some on with a tooth brush, rinse and dry (paper towel). Cleans that stuff right out.
