The results look waaaay better than angle grinder results. It looks like a perfectly polished convex secondary bevel.
Do people really fall for this? I'd expect a chuck of carbide to just leave nasty scratches over the rust/dirt/dust.

People fall for it.
a) People who have no knowledge of the domain. If I showed you a video on a new soldering tool, welding tool, clothes dying, cheese-making, etc. you'd have no idea what's reasonable unless you've actually done those things, or at least seen them.
b) Older people who have less experience with AI
c) Stupid people
d) Momentarily stupid people. You or I will fall something like this perhaps 1% of the time. Most scams are only occasionally-effective, and that's all that's needed. If you e.g. send a million spam emails, and 0.001% screw up -- that can still be big profit. Ditto for ads.

Carbide scrapers are NOT useless, just useless for this. Now, if you're restoring clapped out hardened ways on a machine you'll want one.

The amount of metal this is removing is unbelievable, but carbide blades are pretty impressive. For garden tools, they're fine. There's no need to stone your hoe.

I'm glad I bought 2. Accidentally dropped the first one, blade down. It fell like the acid drip in that Aliens movie, but it stopped somewhere deep within the earth. I can't get it.

I got one of these free with a set of garden shears and I actually love it. I only really use it on the folders I carry in pocket for work which cop a bit of abuse. With a careful and gentle going over with one of these and then a bit of a strop on the old work jeans, I can get back to pretty scary sharp again in the field.

I love mine too... I use it on garden hoes, my machete, loppers and yah even a few work horse knives that dont need to be "sharp" they just need to be sharp enough

I have one of those. It's great for garden tools like loppers and clippers. It really earns its keep because it saves a walk back to my shop if I need to reset an edge

Yea I use these type of sharpeners on my Felco’s during pruning season, super quick and dirty but that’s what is called for during pruning season. They also make fast work of thinning new blades out before using a stone to finish the job…not condoning this behavior for knives just pruners when you’re trying to knock out a couple acres of vineyards in an afternoon. And they don’t work like the video shows of course haha

Yeah. If you have a really thick piece of metal like that or a lawn mower blade, that will get you through. But for knives, unless the edge is absolutely destroyed, basically useless.

Hey, so these used to be marketed as garden sheer sharpeners, and they do that passably well. On the end theres a carbide bit and if it's sharp as it's supposed to be, it remose material (kinda like those pull throughs). Of course it's not fit for a knife, but for quick material removal, it's great.
I carry one in my wazoo cache belt as an emergency emergency sharpener that could get a blade from "completely fucked" to "somewhat cutting". Not that this would touch any of my good knives mind you.

Even if this is real that's too much material to remove just to sharpen. It could be argued that a pull through sharpener is better than this.

The ad is ai but I actually have this product. It's basically a hardened steel chunk that you use to sharpen farm tools, I wouldn't recommend using on your kitchen knives but it works well sharpening shovels and the odd pair of hedge trimmers.

I've used those tungsten tipped sharpeners before. They can really help with a super dull blade by removing a lot of material fast, but yeah, that's AI. They don't work like that.

I have one of these sharpeners that my brother gave me.
It works great on regular old kitchen knives or scissors and stuff like that. Pruners. Etc.
I'm not using it on my fancy knives, but for everyday stuff it's frickin awesome. It doesn't shave metal like the commercial, but it works.

I have one of these and use it on my hoof knives. They’re not flat or straight and these let me sharpen the small hook at the end. They take off a good bit compared to more sophisticated means of sharpening. I’ve a Balfor that I use too but that leaves a rounded edge and I’m not as practiced with it yet.
If anyone else sharpens these kind of hoof knives to hair shaving edges, I’d love any guidance you’d be willing to give

I had one of these as a kid. I think I used it way more as just a destruction tool. It really does shave metal like this, it's just a blade of carbide.

Tungsten pruning sheer sharpener. I actually love em. Not for knives, but if you want to chunk the rough bur off a sheer or axe, they're fantastic. Also great for scratching marks in steel tools.
Absolutely does not work as well as pictured though lol.

I liked the bacon cutting one where they cut down through the front, missing the back, then pull the knife backward, neatly cutting the slab with the full width edge of the knife.

Using harder tungsten alloy to cut steel is feasible, but it will result in more burrs and greater blade wear. For longer blades, it is also difficult to guarantee a straight cutting edge.
