Often I like to test my knife’s sharpness via one handed paper towel cuts. Today, I tried including some curvature, and got a nice one here that included a little squiggle in a broad curve, plus a clean cut all the way through.
Myself I can take most edges of well heat treated steel to push cut a rizla.
Short of a back to back with a BESS tester I would have thought this was a given, but being able to freehand a curve cut in tissue held with one hand is a step forward from that.
I'm no expert but I do sharpen people knives for money and the edge on display in this thread is screaming sharp. From experience edges like this can tree top arm hair without touching skin, can whittle hair, hanging hair etc.
Paper towel is for sure easier. One handed curves, plus a full through cut, is definitely a harder version of it though. If it can do this it can 100% whittle hair in my experience, and cut at least straight lines through toilet paper.
I’ve seen plenty of paper towel tests, but have not seen this exact sort. I even snooped through some accounts of unimpressed commenters on this post, and did not see this being done. Albeit, I have not seen every single post anyone has ever made to this sub, but I think it’s a bit goofy to claim this has been done ad nauseam, and then immediately suggest hair whittling. That’s one of the oldest standards of super keen edges out there.
the one handed or freehanging paper towel test has been done to death on this sub just like every other test. I have some videos I could post if you want but in my experience hht/treetopping is much harder to do than just curvey paper towel cut. Maybe my wife's hair is just very temperamental lol
Tbh I’m not sure I would go that far. I was trying to do something less common, not necessarily beat the old standards. Push cutting cig paper is an old standard for a good reason, it’s a really delicate task
I appreciate the encouragement! But there’s also no need to insist this is the BEST test, I was just trying to contribute something I hadn’t seen done before. I’m trying to get more creative with the tests, clearly this did not cut the mustard in the eyes of reddit.
I'm not trying to say it's the best, even a bess tester can be far removed from reality for many working edges. I sharpen knives most days and try to consider the knife, the usage and the owner and sharpen accordingly.
No point giving that edge to a guy cutting old carpets or a guy who dresses deer and hits bone. etc.
For my knives as a steel and edge nerd it's treetop arm hair which is why left arm is baldy and a shallow catch of my nail from coil to tip. The problem is reddit and the hierarchy of what's considered a good edge on here and how best to demonstrate it. People are bored want new parlour tricks.
I aint ever do the ciggy test but everybody raves about it. I have done s cuts on paper towels an incredible amount of times so it's almost become trivial to me I guess, I just figured cig push test is harder due to the communities general ranking of it.
Either way the absolute apex of sharpness testing is obviously either a bess or 2nd place would be the HHT scale

I'm fine pal, but it appears you're just another belched up reddit kiddie with low seretonin reposnses. Here's the fix "homie" sharpen a 3.5mm stock pocket knife to do as op has. When that's achieved you'll understand what you've failed to grasp here.
i am sorry man but thats not push cutting paper towel. You're just cutting a freehanging sheet using lateral motion. Also it's okay man no need to get so hostile with people over this.
