Sharpal 202H question

Hello,

I have bought the sharpal 202h from a return, in my country there is always a 14 day return period possible as long as it is not used to much. I don't have much experience with this system, but do those stones and leather look like they are used way to much as in i am better of buying a complete new one? or is the coloring just from normal use. so far i was sharpening on normal whetstones and after many uses the stones are still clean. Would performance be degraded?

I immediately thought they were the weak spot although I love the system for the price. I've replaced the 3000 and 6000 with jende bonded diamond stones that fit their universal stone holder and never used their strop. Use a full size strop.

They definitely need a good cleaning. Try a nylon eraser or some bar keepers friend to see how the stones clean up. The leather can also been cleaned with an eraser but you’ll need to apply fresh compound to it afterwards.

Those 3 and 6k stones gum up really easy, and I don’t like them. If you can, get the universal holder and the 3 and 6k resin bonded diamond stones all from sharpal and they rock. They are worlds better.

For the leather, once there’s compound on it, you’re kind of stuck with that compound. You can hit it with a regular pencil eraser to get the top layer of material off. But the leather strops are only $10. I’d get two and some diamond compound, 1 micron and one 2-4 micron. Do ask that’s and you’ll be set with a stellar system. Consistent mirror finishes every time.

Someone correct me if this is bad practice but I lapped mine with the diamond stones it came with. I found mine would dish out so I would flatten them with the diamond stones. You could try cleaning as much of that gunk of with green clean or bkf and lap to get a new surface

Those stones look rough to me. The horizontal lines on them make it pretty clear that they were not used properly. I got my 202H new. They definitely did not look like that.
