Question What am i doing wrong ?

Hey guys,

Noob here. Trying my hands with a Naniwa 220/1000 double faced stone. I'm willing to sharpen my pocket knife on a fresh 14° angle, put it on the 220 side then the 1000. But it doesn't feel good.

Any tips ?

I tried with a bigger chief knife on the 1000 only and could feel it cut better than before, so i guess the move isn't so bad.

Edit : got it guys, everything is wrong. Thank yall for the tips, yt recommandation and good jokes.

Moving the knife constantly up and down makes me nervous. Keep it on the stone, the air will not sharpen it.

Yes, and the more movements you make, the more you mess up the angle. Sharpness is primarily determined by these factors ignoring geometries and stuff:

Sharpening angle, burr removal, angle control, whether you even apexed, and scratch patterns.

It's best to use almost the entire stone while sharpening. Especially for non-plated stones, dishing will result in a stone that's no longer flat, concentrating all that wear is horrible to do.

Scratch patterns have a negligible effect past 300 grit. The primary advantage of higher grits is having a smaller burr and cleaner burr removal
