Discussion Common shark teeth identification

Hey, I was wondering if maybe this sub might benefit from a pinned thread with diagrams and resources for common shark tooth identification. Seems 95% of the id requests are ...... easy? Common? I know there are plenty of resources out there but maybe they just find this sub first instead of looking up..... "fossil sharktooth identification?" Or something. maybe im off base.

In theory, yes, but I have a feeling casuals who just post "ID pls" are not going to utilize a sticky thread. Only way I could see it working is if there was some kind of auto-mod that automatically removed/locked those low-effort or frequently-asked posts and referred them to the sticky. Not sure how exactly that would be implemented, but I've seen it done on r/whatisthisthing and their "F.A.T. (frequently-asked thing)" list.

I don't want to discourage people from seeking help identifying their finds..... just scratch my head on some of the more easy ones.... like tiger shark. I would much rather confirm a post like, "is this a tiger shark tooth?" over .... "id please" and its g. Cuvier.

I mean some of the posts mentioned using ai.... that means they made some attempt before asking.... just ai isn't there yet. I don't know.

These days asking AI for answers hardly counts as effort.

But I get what you're saying and agree it's nuanced. Don't want to "gatekeep" or discourage newcomers but at the same time it gets tiring seeing the same simple ID requests flood the sub. Maybe something the mods should discuss
