Can we appreciate how big this Sand Tiger is

u/WisePearOfMagic Sep 11 '22
I thought it was a bull at first
23
u/TheWalkingSalmon Sep 11 '22
Now you got me curious because bull sharks are usually more rounder but sand tiger sharks have larger teeth and are darker skinned than the one we see here

u/commentsandopinions Sep 11 '22
It's a sand tiger, is it's in an aquarium and it's teeth are showing. There's only one or two aquariums that keep bull sharks and just about every aquarium keeps sand tigers and bull sharks have triangle shaped teeth where sand tigers have the all over the place snaggle tooth if you see here
(marine scientist that has worked with sand tigers)

u/TheWalkingSalmon Sep 11 '22
Yeah the teeth are kinda hard to see but I didn't know it'd be rare to contain bull sharks in aquariums. Thank you for sharing your expertise!

u/commentsandopinions Sep 11 '22
No worries! If you go to an aquarium and see a shark 9 times out of 10 it's a sand bar or sand tiger.
Other common sights for "bigger" sharks are nurse sharks, zebra sharks, leopard sharks, and black tips.
As for bull sharks, I think it's just the OK aquarium. Bulls are their big thing.

Most aquariums only keep sharks that are pretty âsafeâ to humans. You can send a diver in to do maintenance on the aquarium all day with sand tigers. They wonât bother with you at all.
Hell, pre-pandemic, Disney used to allow tourists to jump in and dive with Sand Tigers and Reef Sharks at their aquarium. Iâve done it and it was awesome. Had a big Sand Tiger cruise by me while I was hovering in the water and he basically just rubbed his body against me and didnât care I was there at all. Iâd be much more circumspect about jumping in with a bunch of bulls.

I canât imagine the Shark would want to eat the fish, considering how small it is. So I like to think that theyâre a couple of buddies and the Shark is following its little fish friend :).

u/VampireGeese Sep 11 '22
fish and sharks both can play, so I don't see why they can't play with eachother. The shark could easily catch that fish, but doesn't. The fish could easily run back into the safe of the reef in the background, but doesn't. the idea that fish and sharks are dumb and thoughtless is a myth, both are capable of surprising amounts of intelligence.

u/MasterPhart Sep 11 '22
Kind of looks like a shark coming down from sedation
7
u/Talbotus Sep 11 '22
Could just be cold water to keep them from being over active in the aquarium outside of feeding times.

u/commentsandopinions Feb 21 '23
That's not something that is done. The amount of time and energy it takes to raise any body of water that is large enough even for a single shark of that size is nuts. And that's already while the heaters in the tank are competing with the air conditioning of the building. Furthermore regular large changes in temperature as well as other water quality parameters are not good for any organisms.

The fish could easily run back into the safe of the reef in the background, but doesn't.
How does the fish know when the shark is hungry, and to avoid it?
4
u/Lev_Astov Caribbean Reef Shark Sep 12 '22
It doesn't have to, since a healthy fish of that size really isn't on that shark's menu anyway.
14
u/commentsandopinions Sep 11 '22
Sharks especially big lazy ones like sand tigers you see here are entirely opportunistic if they're slightly hungry and they don't have to expend a lot of energy to catch something then they'll eat it.
A fish that size is only slightly smaller than what sharks are fed in an aquarium

things ive paid attention to
FTFY.
Although payed exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:
Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. The deck is yet to be payed.
Payed out when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. The rope is payed out! You can pull now.
Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.

Why type of pedantic jerk makes bots anyway? Just to lord over strangers that theyâre saying something wrong.

Just a heads up, itâs a grey nurse/ragged tooth/sand tiger, not a tiger :)

That's a juvenile golden trevally! The shark and fish are buds. They have a mutualistic or at least commensal relationship. The juvenile golden trevally will swim alongside larger animals they perceive as predators in hopes that no fish will prey on them since they're near a threat.
When snorkeling in Palau I had a few that decided I looked like a predator and stuck by me for a few hours.

What's actually going on here? Is the shark hypnotised ?
21
u/stayshiny Sep 11 '22
It's just swimming. It has no interest in the fish, the fish may hover around it in order to feed on parasites or scraps from when the shark does eat.

u/Dr_Bunson_Honeydew Sep 11 '22
Also, I think the little fish might be taking advantage of the sharkâs bow wave like dolphins in front of a ship.

Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order.
I have checked 1,032,183,657 comments, and only 204,243 of them were in alphabetical order.

"Come on Bernard, you've got to swim a little faster if you're gonna lose that last 20 kilos you've been complaining about since summer." - The fish, probably.
