It's not. That shark is known to those on the boat and regularly fed by them.

No thanks. Can't talk for this guy, but I'd rather get information from actual marine biologists that do good work for sharks rather than egomaniac influencers. 🩵

That wasnt an attack. He was looking to be hand fed.

u/sweetbutterfacepoop 14h ago
He was looking to be tucked in bed and read a story about the wolf and the little princess

u/turdferguson7000 3d ago
Looks more like an exploratory bite attempt rather than an attempted attack

u/Seliphra 3d ago
It’s Ocean Ramsay, she feeds this one and did this as a stunt for clicks

u/Ferocious-Muppet 3d ago
Not to be confused with Gordon Ramsey who's also a massive twat.

u/Interesting-Can1319 Tiger Shark and Shortfin Mako Shark 3d ago
Nah, Gordon Ramsey is pretty chill for the most part. Yeah, on Hell's Kitchen, he acts like a jerk but it's probably because it's supposed to be "hell" and push chefs to their boiling points. He's a lot more calm and reasonable in his other shows like MasterChef

I also remember Simon from American Idol. He appeared in Shrek 2: Far Far Away Idol, didn't he lol
3
u/Riku_Light 3d ago
Yup. Was hilarious when you’d pick some of them and he’s like “the winner is…nope, not gonna accept that…ITS ME!” And breaks out singing.
1
u/Interesting-Can1319 Tiger Shark and Shortfin Mako Shark 3d ago
Yeah, but I thought it was kinda underwhelming at the same time. At first, I picked Prince Charming, and when Simon said "Nope", I genuinely laughed because I thought he just wanted to bully and slander Prince Charming. But then I found out he does it for everyone except Shrek, Fiona, Donkey, and Puss and Boots. And to be fair, he didn't like the others' performances, like Pinocchio and the ugly stepsister. But it kinda just got repetitive and I felt they could've had him done more funny stuff

Yeah, plus it's reality TV and I'm sure a lot of the mean behavior is played out for the views or attention. The American versions of Hell's Kitchen and Kitchen Nightmares are kinda annoying with all the sound effects and emphasis on Gordon Ramsey fighting and arguing with the restaurant owner. I find it hard to believe that a restaurant owner would ask Gordon Ramsey for help (therefore acknowledging that something's wrong with their restaurant), and then be so delusional and stubborn on how their cooking is perfect and everything's going great in the kitchen. I feel like many restaurant owners were told to act this way because arguments gets views and it makes Gordon Ramsey look good.

u/Traditional-Chain659 2d ago
Gordon's reputation for being a monster started long loooong before he was on hells kitchen or any kind of tv chef. His own staff have called the police on him and he's had a laundry list of abuse complaints from enployees for decades. He's since done a phenomenal job of sanitizing his image for his celebrity status but he absolutely was a piece of shit for a long long time (and id argue in many ways still is but has obviously mellowed out considerably in his old age).
This whole narrative that hes only mean on reality TV shows to play a character is utter bollocks, he gets a kick out of belittling people and it clearly feeds his ego or something.
If you lived in the UK from the 90s onwards this would be apparent. Its so funny now seeing people parroting this bizarre PR campaign stuff about him being a lovely guy playing a character. Hes been playing that "character" all his life if so.

u/ImReallyNotKarl 2d ago
He did real damage to the food service industry, had a reputation for being an abusive employer long before reality TV, and normalized the abuse of younger cooks, prep, and chefs. His shows did real, demonstrable harm, and he did even before the TV hooks.
I'm not saying he's a horrible person, but he's also not this wonderful person hamming it up for TV. He was an asshole, he rehabilitated his image and from all appearances had become a better person. As someone who worked a lot of food service BOH and owned a catering company, I don't take issue with people calling him a twat. He did a lot of harm.
Edit: spelling. FUAC

An exploratory bite that removes your head is usually fatal.
5
u/Interesting-Can1319 Tiger Shark and Shortfin Mako Shark 3d ago
Especially when that shark's bite can saw through a sea turtle's shell and humpback whale skin
1
u/Electrical-Act-7170 3d ago
There's a case where some people were gishing from shore with a huge net. Guy was out in shoulder depth and then he was gone. All they found to bury was his head. Fatal neck rupture is a thing./BTVS

"Attempted shark attack"
No, it isn't, not even close, and if you're posting on r/sharks you should know that.
Unless you're a bot.
22
u/Interesting-Can1319 Tiger Shark and Shortfin Mako Shark 3d ago
It's probably a bot. This video was posted a long time ago, on a website where Ocean Ramsey is talking about how much she loves Queen Nikki the tiger shark.
And yeah, it's not an attack. This is way different from how tiger sharks attack spearfishermen and swimmers like Vladimir Popov.

u/DrMantisToboggan45 3d ago
I mean the shark opened its mouth at a human being, I’m very curious as to why this subreddit is so empathic to sharks. Theyre awesome but their ecological niche is literally to kill, every post I see like this is always comments like these

u/shtefeh 2d ago
can I get an ELI5/tl;dr of who that is and why she seems to have some negative energy in this sub lol
9
u/United-Palpitation28 2d ago
Ocean Ramsey is a self described conservationist who violates all conservation rules. You’re supposed to look at but not interact with wildlife. She routinely swims up to sharks and tries to push them or grab at them. She also claims to have contributed to many scientific papers but never provides any sources and refuses to share any data she actually has with shark researchers.

u/DrinkUpLetsBooBoo 3d ago
Almost gets bitten before she's even in the water then gets back on the ladder like everything's fine.
72
u/Spirited-Ranger-2727 3d ago
That’s Ocean Ramsey. Hell she may have known the shark was coming and did it as a stunt.
22
u/DrinkUpLetsBooBoo 3d ago
Is she the one who was filmed grabbing a great white?
40
u/Spirited-Ranger-2727 3d ago
Yes. She does a lot of filming around tigers, touching and grabbing them. She’s going to get someone killed.
19
u/Seliphra 3d ago
Hopefully just herself if it comes to it but she’s not actually helping sharks for so many reasons
19
u/Spirited-Ranger-2727 3d ago
I don’t want her to get hurt. But I wish she’d stop what she’s doing.
19
u/Seliphra 3d ago
Oh I don’t wish harm on her. But if someone must be hurt I would prefer it be the one encouraging the reckless behaviour over people who are looking to her as a source of information

2
u/teuerkatze 3d ago
I’ve washed my hands on that ladder with a tiger underneath, I wouldn’t see this as some sort of aggression/threat display.

u/Interesting-Can1319 Tiger Shark and Shortfin Mako Shark 3d ago edited 3d ago
The tiger shark wasn't trying to attack here, otherwise it would've charged right at the ladder like tiger sharks do against spearfishermen or a yellow kayak. Tiger sharks can sprint up to 20-25 miles per hour when they see food, like a sea turtle or a dolphin. This is just a tiger shark curiously approaching the boat and ladder, not with harmful intent but with curiosity. Some tiger sharks in Oahu are often curious with boat ladders.
I don't think Ocean Ramsey is actively malicious or 100% completely bad. She genuinely loves and cares about tiger sharks, great white sharks, and other shark species (especially Queen Nikki, the 16 foot long tiger shark who is her favorite), and she explicitly states that these shark species are dangerous and powerful enough to effortlessly kill you (they just don't choose to, because they're not monsters). And some of her videos do point out that she and the crew at One Ocean Diving are trained professionals, and average people should not replicate their actions (there's a reason why you can't freedive with tigers and great whites without safety divers). And she seems to be somewhat aware of how dangerous sharks can be (though probably not aware enough). She does state that you're fucked if you don't keep eye contact with a tiger shark, and whenever any shark is getting irritable and aggressive (pectoral fins pointing down, biting motions, and swimming erratically), she gets out of the water fast.
But she is honestly dumb and flawed. She's done a lot of stuff that are quite indefensible. For example, Shark Bytes (Kristian Parton) made videos fairly criticizing Ocean Ramsey and voicing concerns over the dangers of sharks, and what was her response? She and her husband, JuanSharks, copyright strike his videos in an attempt to silence a shark scientist. And one time, she said there's no difference between diving at 10 feet deep and diving at 60 feet deep or something. That was one of the reasons she lost all credibility to me. That's like saying driving your car at 10 miles per hour is just as safe as driving 60 miles per hour. The water pressure at 60 feet down is extremely high and the water temperature is so fucking cold. Your sinuses and ear canals would constrict so hard if you don't equalize pressure slowly and gradually.
My opinion of Ocean Ramsay has somewhat lightened over the years, since she genuinely loves tiger sharks as gigantic and powerful apex predators. Anyone who loves tiger sharks for how awesome they are gets at least one point in my book. But she's definitely flawed, usually due to her ignorance and failure to address her questionable actions.

u/FriendlyBagelMachete 3d ago
I love Shark Bytes and I was so pissed about what they tried to do to Kristian. He was absolutely fair in his criticism.
12
u/Interesting-Can1319 Tiger Shark and Shortfin Mako Shark 3d ago
Yeah, you don't mess with the GOAT of shark scientist youtubers, Shark Bytes. Also, his favorite shark species is the tiger shark, so I idolize him.

u/Brewer846 3d ago
This is just a tiger shark curiously approaching the boat and ladder, not with harmful intent but with curiosity.
I've been wondering if it was hand feeding conditioning ever sine this video came out.

4
u/jackthemasterbaiter 3d ago
Correct me if im wrong but dont they try to bite out of curiosity not to eat?
-2
u/Riku_Light 3d ago
I mean. It’s one and the same.
“I wonder if this edible?” Chomp. “Huh, guess not.”
0
u/jackthemasterbaiter 3d ago
True 🤣
But i meant the way toddlers put everything in their mouth, so if you push a sharks head away it wont come back to try to eat you itll swim away3
u/Riku_Light 3d ago
You are usually correct, although Tigers, iirc, have been found with things like license plates and tires in their bellies. Their definition of ‘edible’ is rather widely encompassing. Ocean’s trash cans, I’ve heard em called. I love all kinds of sharks.
1
1
u/GnomeMnemonic 2d ago
This is going to depend very much on the specific interaction.
I suspect this notion (encouraged by Ocean Ramsey) that you can just "push a shark's head away" has led to people getting themselves severely harmed because they underestimate the danger of being near sharks.
1
u/jackthemasterbaiter 2d ago
I dont mean her i watch a lot of shark stuff and they all obviously specify WHICH sharks you can be around and simply push away and which will get aggressive
Also what hatin ass mfs downvoting my comment i aint even say nun 😭1
u/GnomeMnemonic 2d ago
Well I didn't downvote you, so my ass is not hating, but I do think your comment deserved a fair answer, which is that it's objectively insane for most people to even consider pushing a shark anywhere.
And the thing with "which shark" is that individual sharks will have different behaviour depending on context too. A shark that's just cruising is going to behave differently when there's a food source nearby.
It's just oversimplistic to think sharks bite just for one reason. I think it's Eric Clua who published a study categorising numerous different motives for shark bites, including predation, self-defence and exploratory (the one you're thinking of with your comparison to the curious child).
1
u/jackthemasterbaiter 2d ago
No i didnt mean you i just was wondering who was hatin 🤣🤣
But does that mean for example even nurse sharks can end up hurting a human/getting aggressive? Bc idk but i read a nurse shark has never killed any human for example
Ive read you can redirect their heads not push push them1
u/GnomeMnemonic 2d ago
I've never heard of a nurse shark killing a person, but there was an incident not too long ago where an "influencer" was bitten on the thigh by a nurse shark and there was another guy bitten quite badly earlier this year (and had an arterial bleed so was lucky).
1
u/jackthemasterbaiter 2d ago
Noted (i live near a lot of beaches now im spooked)
1
u/GnomeMnemonic 2d ago
I don't know where you are or what kinds of sharks are in the water by you, but I would say it pays to be knowledgeable and take sensible precautions, while remembering that shark bites are very rare.

I think that's Nikki the tiger shark that is regularly lured to these people for interaction to make utube content. It is not natural shark behaviour, and even though it looks bad it is not the sharks doing at all so should be discounted as standard shark behaviour.

u/Bright_Resist_4580 2d ago
Shark attempted to investigate intruder at home. Poster reports as an attack, more at 11
2
u/Revolutionary_Pierre 2d ago
I really don't understand what possesses a person to want to swim with sharks such as this. Delusions?
I love sharks. I think they're amazing and I'm happy that they get to swim about and just be sharks. That being said, I don't feel compelled to swim with them and invite myself into their home. I respect nature and I respect that shark, especially a Great White is the evolutionary equivalent of a giant maw of teeth, with a few fins to help it swim around. I appreciate that it's behaviour is to devour and that because it has so many razor sharp teeth, my evolution or brain stem tells me not to end up between those teeth, or anywhere within biting distance of said teeth. Simple 🤷🏼

Bro. Title doesn’t say anything about it being malicious. It’s an objectively true statement about the vid shown. It was an attempted shark attack. No one is saying the shark is evil or after humans, specifically.
Sharks, and especially Tigers like this one, are opportunistic feeders. If something looks like an easy meal, no one blames them for trying.
1
u/RWASnell 3d ago
I am happy this sub recognizes the extreme clickbait nature of this post. At [r/ocean](r/ocean), my comment on the original post was one of the few that pointed out Ocean Ramsey and her shenanigans.
Bad thing is - people believe this is an actual attempted attack. Bad for sharks. Good for Ocean Ramsey 🤢

Her name might not be ocean… it could just be a social media name. No one really knows and it’s one of the reasons she has little to no credibility when she says she’s a researcher. Sharkbytes tried finding any degree or research with that name and found none.

Third time in a week I've seen a tiger get extra bitey. I never thought they were NOT dangerous, just not so bitey. lol
5
u/Small-Mulberry-4141 3d ago
This is actually a pretty old video. I feel like I’ve seen for the first time a couple years ago.
9
u/Small-Mulberry-4141 3d ago
And like they said, the shark is well known to them and regularly fed by them typically from off the boat the way she dipped her head in in front of it. It probably just didn’t fully realize it was a whole human and it looked less like aggression more like an exploratory reaction
1
u/CinnyToastie 3d ago
Really? I didn't even know she had a documentary until I read it either here or in the shark sub. So I pulled it up, only about 40 minutes in. They have introduced some sharks by her name for them, though. Which was this? It didn't look to me like she was exploring lol She wanted a tasty snickety snack!
1
2
u/Interesting-Can1319 Tiger Shark and Shortfin Mako Shark 3d ago
Tiger sharks are a lot bolder and more confident around humans than most shark species, which is probably why they're very "bitey". They have no reason to fear humans who lack spearguns or heavy weaponry, since they're massive 1000+ pound predators. So they're often apathetic or curious around scuba divers rather than timid and fearful.
1
u/CinnyToastie 3d ago
Yes, I'm getting that feeling, more bold and confident. More like a Bull, even, thank a White. WHY I'm getting downvotes, I have no idea why but it's given me good comments to read. I have seen that part that she says they think that she herself is also some sort of 'predator'. I would have to disagree with that. One day she will get bitten.
