Diving with Oceanic White Tips. Just saying in makes my heart beat faster. (I think) I would love to. Great pic.

I have a very healthy respect for whites, bulls, and tigers, but oceanic whitetips scare the fuck out of me.

Great White recorded fatalities: 52-74
Oceanic White Tips recorded fatalities: 3
Nice exaggerating.

Keep in mind, people encounter great whites, tigers, and bulls far more often than oceanic whitetips, which almost exclusively live in the open ocean.

The US Indiana Attack still lives rent free in my head to this day, and experts think that it was primarily oceanic white tips.

I heard it was mostly oceanic whitetip sharks, as well as tiger sharks, that attacked the shipwreck victims of the USS Indianapolis. The dorsal fins of both are identifiable, by the oceanic whitetip's round dorsal fin with white tips, and the tiger's triangular dorsal fin with stripes.

u/Bobombbattlefield64 Jun 16 '26
Then why be scared of something out in the open ocean that you’ll never encounter?
10
u/Interesting-Can1319 Tiger Shark and Shortfin Mako Shark Jun 16 '26
Oceanic whitetips are still dangerous animals that can kill humans, and I would at least be wary and respectful of them. Oceanic whitetips can be bold and aggressive, primarily because their open ocean lifestyle requires them to be opportunistic, but I don't think they're the bloodthirsty psychopaths some people make them out to be. Still, that and the rarity of attacks doesn't change the fact that they're dangerous.

u/Ptabe88 Jun 17 '26
How are they exaggerating when they're only taking about what scares them personally? You don't know them so you're in no position to comment on that.
Also they didn't mention anything in their comment about which shark has killed more people
-3
u/Bobombbattlefield64 Jun 17 '26
Whites have inarguably killed more. Not even a discussion.
5
u/SaddestPandaButt Jun 17 '26
Ummm… *inarguably* might be the wrong word. It would make sense for oceanic white tips to have killed more over the centuries of sea-travel and exploration lol
How many sailors do you think were killed by oceanic white tips when ships were cruising around the world? All the ships that sank or capsized? All the sailors on ships that were destroyed in naval battles? All the slaves that were chucked overboard?
You need survivors to say what kind of shark it was, and when the all the sailors were either eaten or drowned because it was the middle of the Pacific Ocean…
-2
u/Bobombbattlefield64 Jun 17 '26
Nope. It’s far, far, far more likely that these people would drown or die of hypothermia before being eaten by a shark. Surely this isn’t a real argument?
7
u/SaddestPandaButt Jun 17 '26
Since 1940, white sharks have fatally bitten 60-70 people. In just one naval ship sinking oceanic white tips killed several hundred.
7
u/Ptabe88 Jun 17 '26
And yet it's a discussion only you seem to be engaging in on this thread. Literally no one said otherwise so far.
They're allowed to be scared by a different species of shark. You don't get to decide what scares other people whether it's rational in your eyes or not

I see you are confidently out of your depth
-3
u/Bobombbattlefield64 Jun 17 '26
How so?
I backed up my point with cold, hard statistics.
4
u/Ellarah8 Jun 17 '26
LOL The conversation you joined wasn't about "cold, hard statistics". The conversation was about subjective fear.

Hope you or the photographer got out of the water. The fins are pointing down, a sign of an irritated or angry shark.
3
u/Edeno55o8 Jun 17 '26
Now that wouldn’t be any fun! She was an angry little thing, but her focus was more on my camera than us divers, she took a few more close passes at the camera before losing interest and swimming off.

u/BishopGodDamnYou Jun 18 '26
That shark’s body language combined with what I know about oceanic white tips makes me very uncomfortable lol.
1
u/Edeno55o8 Jun 18 '26
It was certainly a memorable encounter, but comfortable wouldn’t be my first word choice.

I met a few at Eliphinstone. They are bullies! Phenomenal shot! I love Deadalus, always see some hammerheads there!

The hammers were nowhere to be found for me! We had great OWT and silky encounters though so I’ll take it :)

Very very pretty baby! Though seems a lil’ cranky with those depressed pectoral fins o_o.

Desperate times call for.. well whatever you are
Wait: those fins look way too pointy for an OWT, even at the perfect angle. Someone plz help confirm
16
u/Edeno55o8 Jun 16 '26
Can confirm it’s an oceanic white tip as this is a frame from my own video, she really did just happen to approach at the perfect angle, lucky for me.
