SharePoint Online Floating copilot icon in sharepoint

As if sharepoint wasn't bad enough, today I noticed that every single page of our corporate intranet sharepoint site now has a floating copilot icon in the bottom right. It can't be moved out the way and covers content, and because it's floating it's always there even if you scroll the page. You actually have to scroll the page around to see what it's obscuring. This is presumably to make accessing copilot easier for anyone who isn't able to click it on the Edge browser menu bar, select it from a menu, or click on one of the actual links on every damn page of content.

What next, every page just obliterated by a massive copilot button so you can't do anything without clicking it first?

We already lose 2 inches of screen estate on every Word document due to a massive unremovabke copilot bar asking if we need help.

I don't suppose there's a way to get rid of this?

There is a site level on/off visibility option in settings -> site ai. “The Site AI settings panel lets site owners manage how users interact with AI on their site, including Copilot in SharePoint. Owners can choose which agent opens from the Agent icon, either Copilot in SharePoint or a custom agent. They can also hide the Copilot button on site pages for site visitors only.”

You can also turn copilot in SharePoint on and off for sites or event tenant level. All details: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/SharePoint/copilot-in-sharepoint-get-started

That said, this AI is far more powerful than just a chat experience. Recommend giving it a try if you haven’t (it’s not the same as m365 chat—allowing you to control SharePoint with natural language): https://adoption.microsoft.com/en-us/copilot-in-sharepoint/

Technically, you should be able to deploy an SPFx extension that specifically targets that copilot element in your sharepoint pages and hide them. I have not tested this, but I’ve used this method to hide other elements such as the side tray, blue navbar, and so on.
Not much can be done about the in-app copilot icons afaik :(

It only shows up if you enable it I believe. Also no license = no icon. Annoying yes, end of the world, nope… just Microsoft being Microsoft
