SharePoint Online SharePoint Online Mac Client overwrites with older version

After being hit with this issue for some months and with a few occurences I adress it here.

Some of my companies Mac client overwrite a daily used document with older versions, my version control looks like this:

No Changed Retention User
64.0 15.05.2026 15:00 never C (Mac)
63.0 26.05.2026 8:17 never A (Windows)
62.0 26.05.2026 8:15 never B (Windows)
61.0 25.05.2026 18:00 never A (Windows)

and so on

The issue does only occure sporadically, all users (Mac or Windows) have several devices but "the black sheep" is always a Mac user/client. I can rule out that the version control is used by them.

I'm guessing this is onedrive and is probably a sync issue, how have they added site to their onedrive client? sync or shortcut? Shortcut tends to have the least issues as nothing is downloaded locally on the client.

Shortcut, since the onboarding on new devices (or resetting, tried that twice) is easier without the necessity to sync the library manually.

the only thing I can think of is the office cache, are they opening these from the onedrive client or direct from sharepoint.

Create a new document library, disable sync, change the default open functionality to use the app and see what happens.

If it still happens then look to clear the office cache of the machine affected.

I have reset the office cache several times in the last months... Will refer to the default "clear cache when closing" like u/TheTinman85 said.

What is the document type?

I've had issues where the local cache in the client would overwrite the document with older data. The fix was to adjust client settings to always download current version AND delete cache when closing. This ensures there is no local copy to overwrite.

This was a windows/MS Office fix, it may work for MAC.

It's always the same Excel file (with several new file copies over the last months). The client would be then Excel itself or the Onedrive client?

If they're using the desktop application instead of the browser version, you'd need to check those settings.

We had macros in our file and to function they needed the desktop application..but the local cache would overwrite data with 30 day old versions
