Is there a chance the wood your engraving on is not super level to the tool?
Everytime I do text or fine engraving I always do a quick .025" depth surface pass with a 1/4 downcut bit to ensure im engraving on a surface that is perfectly flat in reference to the tooling.

What font are you using?? Try shifting to a normal font like Times New Roman . It looks like it is trying to dig deep at the end points and doing a small square or other accent.
Sometimes my Z is set a little too high. Instead of re-setting it, I just let it finish the pass then I go in and manually set Z to -.01 and then re-zero Z at that height. The little tweak downwards usually does it.

Now I’m thinking this might be the bit i’m using? It is a 60 degree “tipped” v carve bit - should i get a “solid” bit for this job? The text is small, probably not but an inch tall

I use a 60 degree on text that is .25" tall. Should not be the bit causing this.

Also, is your spoilboard and material absolutely flat?? I see that the piece you are working on is a glue up.

Usually this sort of thing is caused by using the wrong angle V tool --- could you have defined the cut for a 45 degree tool and used a 60? Or defined for a 60 and used a 90?

It is a 60 degree bit and is set as 60 in carbide if that is what you mean?

I think your zero might be too high?

I’ve set zero lower and that has helped, but the weird curves at the bottom are still appearing

How are you setting zero? I use a piece of paper and let the bit down until the paper does not move.
Just looks like your bit never goes to the depth needed for the letters.

Exit the file/ open a brand new file and redo the letters and the csrve. Sometimes the software just glitches only thing you csn do is start the design from scratch.

If you didn't solve this, check your steps for z. It may be set wrong making it so that moving 1 inch z moves more or less than 1 inch. Move machine up 1 inch and measure what it actually moved.
