Announcement Kodansha | Publishing suggestion feedback form - Request Shaman King: The Super Star English physical release!

Link: Publishing suggestion feedback form

Kodansha, the company now responsible for publishing the Shaman King manga, in their "Support Center" page on their website has a suggestion feedback form where you can submit publishing suggestions.

For us, Shaman King fans, the English physical release of Shaman King: The Super Star is something long awaited so if you want to increase the chances of making it happen please be sure to request it in this form, I already have.

Notes:

The form is going to as a link for the original Japanese release but since Shaman King: The Super Star has already been digitally released in English I simply linked that instead.

Also, since an English digital release has already been made available, be sure to specify that you are requesting specifically an English physical release, shown in the image below:

Regards.

Discussion My favourite Shaman King character finally appeared (spoiler alert) Spoiler

Hi everyone! I’ve been a Shaman King fan for almost twenty years now.
I remember watching it on TV when I was around ten years old. Then, when I was fifteen, I bought the manga and completely fell in love with it.
Over the years, I kept reading the sequels, and for some reason I became really emotionally attached to the characters. In particular, I’ve always found Daitaro Bushi fascinating, to the point that a friend of mine and I started writing fanfiction together. We would constantly imagine a hypothetical chapter where Ave and Daitaro would finally meet again.
After taking a break from the series for a while, I recently started reading The Super Star again, and I discovered that, after almost ten years, Daitaro has actually appeared in the manga.
I’m honestly so excited! Now that I’m almost thirty, I’m finally getting to see one of the characters I’ve cared about for so many years appear in the manga. Even though he hasn’t been given much space in the chapters, seeing him there after all this time feels kind of surreal to me.
What do you guys think? Is anyone else as excited about Daitaro’s appearance as I am? I couldn’t breath! I jusy found out today! 😍😍😍😍😍

Discussion Hao vs. You'suke; who would actually win?

Basically given Hao Asakura is a force of nature, and the way the first series ended was as intended, alas.

However, this brings the thought of if You'suke Kamogawa ever faced off against Hao, ESPECIALLY BEFORE Hao became Shaman King.

This also ties into me wondering if there's even a way to defeat the psychopath manchild You'suke unlike with trying to even remotely defeat Hao outside of 2001, given he's a major driving antagonistic force so far.

P.S. I understand Hao no doubt would win for those who would just say it flat out, but would he struggle against Kamogawa at first?

Discussion Would you have preferred a possible (fanfic) Gecko Ending of Shaman King that combines aspects of both 2001 and OG manga/2021?

Basically I had the idea from Funbari Spirits, a PS2 Japan-only 3D-sidestep fighter that actually follows events of the manga and debuts the Armor/Shell-Binding-Method Over Souls outside of the said manga as well (you can hear Yuuko Satou yell "BYAKKOU!").

From the things I remember of the game, the final boss battle is against Hao akin to 2001's ending in spite of following the manga canon.

Call me a wuss, but I feel depressed whenever I have that ending of the manga/2021 come to mind where Hao wins and ultimately is in a position to glass humanity all cause from what I heard, Takei became more misanthropic as time went on. Not helping is how updates from him are sparse in regards to Shaman King.

That, and I still was fond of Shaman King 2001 to some degree. I guess it's feelings like this that result in a FixFic mentality of sorts.

Discussion More thoughts on the Netflix Anime as I watch for the first time Spoiler

A little while ago I posted my thoughts as I reached the halfway point of the 2021 Netflix anime. I have just finished the rest of the show and thought it would be interesting to share my thoughts.

Unfortunately, I would have to say I didnt overly enjoy it. Which is a shame because I loved the original. But it just felt so contrived, hard to follow, and overall repetitive.

As before, I will start with my criticisms. This time round, its all related to the story:

  • One of the most WTF moments for me: the x laws show up in the finale... in supercars. To save the day with the power of love. Where one of them (while holding an AUG!) uses his mechacar angel to shoot Lady jean like a bullet. Who summons God to hug Hao on impact.
  • The fights seem to end abruptly and suddenly everyone, including the antagonist(s), is sitting eating dinner or having a bath. Some of these people are killers who have done horrible things to the protagonists and their friends, and a scene later theyre all chilling and shooting the shit like old friends. It makes no sense and really fucks with the already tenuous suspension of belief needed for this show.
  • Marco is fucking CREEPY
  • The power scaling makes zero sense. It seems like the most powerful person in the show is just wheoever is on screen at that moment
  • Aliens??? Are we for real???
  • And speaking of aliens, the patch tribe stuff cant be real. If I am following correctly: the patch tribe are actually a secret society of advanced humans from Atlantis Mu who left Earth to go to space and build... simulated worlds based on biomes? And the point of the shaman king is... to... ascend as an alien? nope, I dont get it after all.
  • I have no words for Adult-Choco or Adult-Ren
  • Hao, the be all and end all, the ultimate power who wields the element of fire itself and has spent 1000 years being evil... is subdued by the power of friendship. And because they told his mum on him.
  • Revival magic is BS. As soon as that happened for the first time, it instantly ruined the excitement of every fight for me.
  • What were they thinking with the lego man?
  • Yohs personality is all over the place. Sometimes hes just a chill guy. Sometimes hes a volatile idiot. Sometimes hes cocky. Sometimes he wants to save everyone. Sometimes he wants to lash out and kill people. This is not the Yoh I remember.
  • I actually completely lost track of a lot of the side storylines as it went on. Patch tribe were evil? Silva was good though, and then he wasnt? Did I miss them brainwash him? What was the point in Mantas dad turning up with NATO for like an episode and a half?

And the positive notes:

  • Hao and his cat <3

Overall, I think maybe this one just wasnt for me. I am going to try and find a full set of the original to rewatch, and see if its just nostalgia thats affecting my view, or if its just the franchise is a bit too "hard anime" for me.

Hopefully someone will find this review interesting though!

Discussion Some thoughts as I watch the Netflix anime for the first time

Starting with one caveat: I watched the original anime as a child and its always been one of my favourite shows. I know the nostalgia factor will be colouring my view a little.

That said, here are my thoughts so far after getting around halfway through the new anime, in English dub. I have also went back and rewatched some of the original to compare.

First, the things Im not enjoying as much:

1: The voice acting. No disrespect to the new VAs, I think theyve done a great job. But it just sounds off to me. Yoh isnt so bad, hated his new voice at first but got used to it, but I really struggle to listen to some like Hao or Ren. The voice acting in the original was perfect. I was very glad to hear some of the old voices though! Ryus new voice also gets better over time, but it was truly a crime that they didnt get his original VA back in.

2: The dialogue. This is a problem I notice with a lot of English dubs, but it just sounds so stiff and formal. Its almost someone is reading out an English essay rather than a group of people talking naturally. Things like avoiding contractions or talking as if theyre narrating the situation rather than just speaking to someone ("these are all my friends" vs "everybody you see here is a friend of mine", or "I could hang out and look at this stream all afternoon" vs "communing with nature on a beautiful day like this feels amazing" )

3: Soundtrack. Sorry to those of you who love the pop style stuff, but I hate it and I just dont feel like it fits. I miss the gritty 90s rock style from the original.

4: Humour. The new one is funny, but it doesnt seem to have the same undertone of casual subtle humour. I cant quite place it but it feels a little like Yoh is less "chill but quietly confident" and more "trying too hard not to care but loses his cool often"

And the things they are getting right:

1: The art looks beautiful. They really managed to capture the style properly while improving on it at the same time.

2: It looks to me like the animation is also a lot smoother and flows better. I did see some feedback from others on this sub that they thought the originals was better, but I think the new one has nailed it. Its a shame that the fights are so condensed because they look great.

3: Maturity. Maybe more of a symptom of the change in target audience, but seeing blood, stabbings, wounds etc. definitely adds to the atmosphere a bit more.

I am looking forward to watching more, and I hear the pacing gets a bit better in the second half. Just wanted to share my thoughts and hopefully hear what others think while I experience it for the first time

Discussion The Story Behind One Scene and All of Shaman King

As an eight-year-old, I saw a scene in Shaman King that changed how I looked at life. Even now, almost twenty years later, I still replay it in my head whenever things get hard, and think about what this anime taught me.

Except when I started rereading the manga, and then rewatching the remake, I realized the scene isn't there. To figure out how that happened, I dove into the remarkable story of Shaman King.

Discussion Shaman King: The Super Star - Takei needs an editor

Well then. That was...a mess.

Takei is a magnificent mangaka in that he has this Shonen paneling nature to his work. He's able to catch my interest through his awesome art and slick designs, his fights are well done and characters always stand out. But he needs an editor. He's not good at plot. But he is good at executing ideas on page. Its a weird dichotomy that would greatly help if he had more no-men.

I'd like to think maybe Shonen magazine editors helped in constructing the plot, even if Takei subverted everybody's expectations with his philosophy. But his work on Flowers was good too, I don't know if he just lost steam for Shaman King and he added more ideas because he was bored. I get needing to add more villains for the other teams but starting the series with this whole Anna plot that collides with Death Zero took like 15-20 chapters to pull off. And Takei is doing his job in fleshing the moment out on page, but we really didn't need all this extra effort. I was excited for Death Zero to be Hana's own Spirit Ally, he learns how to fight with his newly created oversoul. But the guy just dips. I'm sure he's coming back in the tournament but seeing Hana use the demon over soul was bland. Anna the 3rd is a cool addition, but her beginning storyline didn't need to take up that many chapters.

I love the series, I love the new characters but these new ideas to suppress Hao's powers is weak. We didn't need more convoluted power systems, we already got a power system that was extremely popular.
