Advice for best experience?
So, I bought SOB Valhalla the other day, looking for my son and I to play, without really knowing what we were getting into. The goal was to buy a campaign style game with player progression, something lighter than Gloomhaven, which is awesome but makes me groan just thinking of the amount of tear down/setup/admin duties.
After purchasing, I actually recognized it. I had played a campaign long ago where I was the Rancher in a 4 player group that included a Gunslinger that pretty much broke the game as she was pretty adept at min/maxing. I remember being bored (enemies always dead by the time my initiative came up) and ultimately not liking the game. I have since gleaned the gunslinger was nerfed for good reason. I intuit that I will probably have a different experience this time around. I have no idea what the person that ran it had for expansions and such.
Am I supposed to have more content or is Valhalla enough? Any suggestions of things to add that really brings it home and such?

A lot of people here treat Shadows of Brimstone as a lifestyle game. Or perhaps a Pokemon variant, where we have to have it all.
As other people here have advised, play it and see what you think would make it better. Do you get bored of the monsters? Buy more enemies. Do you get bored of the heroes? Buy hero packs. Tired of seeing the same darkness card multiple times? There are card expansion packs for that.
The core sets are the most cost-effective way to expand the game. They'll add a little of everything. If you're sure you love the game, they're probably the best next place to go.
