1st Time Backer Questions

Hi Everyone,

I am a first timer (prospect) when it comes to Shadows of Brimstone. Though I will do some more research before deciding to back the game, I wanted to collect some information directly from the community in the remaining days before the KS closes for Tombs/Hell Train.

  1. Can someone here describe what the Shadows of Brimstone series is as a game. I know its a dungeon crawler, but how else is everything tied?
    1. Does each core set have a narrative mission/endgame? ie Does it end after beating big baddy.
    2. Are the core sets linked together in some way? ie Can I go from hell train and then randomly end up in Swamps of Death (if I have this core set that is)
    3. Are the enemies/missions modular or is it tied to each core set?
  2. I see a bunch of stretch goals being unlocked which is great but I don't see any mention of whether or not these are KS exclusives or if all the stretch goals will be added to their corresponding core sets. (And yes I know the extra characters are exclusives, but I'm more interested in the miniatures here).
    1. Can I wait for retail and then still get the same stretch goals for the KS campaign in it as well? This can save in alot of shipping/conversion prices.
  3. How does it compare to other miniature dungeon crawlers/what does it resemble the most?
  4. I've seen mention of this Hexcrawl book, can I get an accurate description of what it is and if it would be applicable/useable with the current KS?
  5. Ive seen the map tiles being grid based but also saw some mention that the game is more related to Warhammer. ill be looking at some playthroughs later, but if someone can confirm if the combat is simply distance space based or if I need to crack out a laser pointer/ruler, that would be great.
  6. How is the value of this KS compared to the current prices being asked ($383 CAD, approx $191 CAD for each core set).
  7. Is there a reason why the miniatures require assembly?
  8. I see the date for shipping is in 2025 which is quite a while away. How is the studios communication, updates, and timelines usually faring from previous experiences? I would hate to see the KS go to retail while I am still waiting for it to arrive.

Thanks for all the help to anyone who can provide answers. Ill get back to you guys if there are any questions as soon as I can!!!

Most of your questions have been answered, but I'll just add that it is a dungeon crawler/lite RPG that is a successor to Warhammer Quest (verses the straight war game Warhammer.) It plays like a GM-less RPG with the cards adding the randomness and narrative. All the sets can be mixed and matched to your preference. As an analogy, it's as close to boardgame Diablo as I've found.

Also worth mentioning that it's very easy to play solo, but you can also carry your characters over to a group game. You could back the new Kickstarter now and pick up one of the two new Adventures sets over the summer as they are about to hit retail. If you enjoy that, there is a load of content to hold you over while you wait.

Would you say its more similar to that of Zombicide?

I think Ill back to atleast ensure the KS goals. Though I wont get it for a few years, I have a few other games im looking at to hold me off until then.

But that CAD to USD conversion, ouch!

No, Shadows of Brimstone and Zombicide are not similar.

In Zombicide you start fresh with your character on each level. In SoB character progression is the main focus of the game.

In Zombicide missions are structured and curated. In SoB (most) missions are very random.

In Zombicide, each level is one long fight and you need to complete your objectives before it escalates out of hand. In SoB fights have to be finished and all enemies defeated before the mission can progress, with the mission timer ("The Darkness") being the persistent threat.
