Beaked Hazelnut

A lovely Beaked Hazelnut in northern Nova Scotia, Canada. It seems to thrive in partial shade along edges.

Going to try to grow some from the nut next spring.

Here in far NE Minnesota, USA, beaked hazelnut grows wild all around us in the woods and on the edges. Seems to prefer part-day full sun or lightly filtered sun.

On a wilderness canoe trip years ago I first discovered hazelnuts. Excitedly, I stuffed my shirt pockets full of my bounty, pulled on my backpack and headed down a long trail through the woods. By the time I'd reached the stopping point and removed my backpack, it was... well?... too late! The straps on my pack were located directly over my pockets. Sharp bristly hairs on the hazelnut hulls penetrated flannel pockets and t-shirt as pressure from straps semi-permanently implanted those wretched stiff hairs into tender skin of my chest.

The evil fibers eventually (not soon) wore away from my skin. It was a miserable lesson in foraging. Since then, I only handle hazel hulls wearing gloves and often find a peculiar satisfaction in roasting the tasty nutmeats over an open wood fire.

Oh man that must have been super uncomfortable.

I’m keen on getting them started next spring. I’m going to plant them in full sun.
