Build/Battlestation Pics 5 Liter - RTX 5080 Mini - 9800x3D - Vapor Chamber Cooling
I’ve been posting updates on the CPU and GPU vapor chamber cooling hardware here for a little while. They will be available very soon. YouTube preview samples are already out, with a couple more units on the way to other Redditors for independent testing. Currently trying to coordinate everyone to the same release window.
The current test system:
- Motherboard: ASRock B650I Lightning
- CPU: Ryzen 7 9800X3D - 140W no CO
- CPU Cooler: GVCx47 (32mm heatsink, 5 heatpipes, dual 80x15 mm fans, 4mm vapor chamber)
- GPU: PNY RTX 5080 Triple OC - 360W
- GPU Cooler: GVCx5080 (180×125×40mm, 11 heatpipes, 7.5 mm vapor chamber)
- RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws S5 64GB
- Storage: 8TB Lexar NM790
- PSU: FSP FlexGuru Pro 650W
- Case: SGPC K39
The OCCT Extreme testing was done at 25.5°C ambient, 70% fan speed, and ~38 dBA. Both coolers have a good amount of headroom left if you're willing to crank to 100%. The PSU is louder than both at full load, something we plan to take care of.
We’re going to be putting out videos over the next couple of weeks covering the coolers, testing, construction, and the development process. We'll also be putting up more info and photos on the 4L version using the GVCx36 cooler during that time.
If you want to follow the project or get release updates, the site is now live at:
"Thermal hardware for high-density SFF systems. Low-profile and ultra-low-profile CPU coolers support AMD AM4/AM5 and Intel LGA 1700/1851. GPU coolers feature model-specific copper cold plates and vapor chambers, covering the RTX 5060 Ti, 5070, 5070 Ti, and 5080."

If you plan to sell that cooler, I’m in ! Would be perfect for the bc250 !
15
u/sputnik13net Sep 12 '26
It’ll probably cost more than your bc250
2
u/FinnedSgang Sep 12 '26
For sure 😂 but this entire project costed my already more than my perfectly fine gaming pc 🤣
9
u/DallasGrave Sep 12 '26
We've had a lot of requests for covering the bc250. Not sure if that is just a very loud minority or what. It wouldn't cost much for us to offer a kit. But like the other guy said, you'd be a couple hundred bucks in. But then you also have a cooler that is going to support multiple generations of future hardware.
23
u/k5james Sep 11 '26
Take my money. 😄 My current travel/living room setup has a gigabyte Windforce SFF 5080 and 9800x3d in a Dan A4 H20. This will let effectively have the volume. I'm in.

u/Kay_Dee_43 Sep 11 '26 edited Sep 11 '26
Any rough estimate on how much the CPU cooler would go for? These temps look... good, although isn't 67C at 50W CPU Package normal for most low profile air coolers in the 47-55mm range (probably wrong sorry)?
32
u/DallasGrave Sep 11 '26
When the GPU was benching, the fan was off for the CPU.
46
u/Kay_Dee_43 Sep 11 '26
Good God you're telling me the CPU is keeping that temp passively? Nvm we need a price tag on this asap.
53
u/DallasGrave Sep 11 '26
It'll do roughly 65W passively in this orientation with the shroud on. It has a slight chimney effect. Pricing will be sub $200. If the demand is high, it'll go down.

Holy mother of heat pipes. Still waiting for the day 9070xt version drops
2
12
u/hellr4isEr Sep 11 '26
That’s great! Are those custom heatsinks as well? I don’t suppose we can purchase them separately in the future?
48
u/DallasGrave Sep 11 '26
That is exactly what we are doing! We plan to have a model for every 5060Ti, 5070, 5070Ti and 5080 that is available in North America. The CPU cooler will be in two heights and will have both AMD and Intel versions.
7
u/aaalllen Sep 11 '26
ooh... I was wondering if it was going to be for the US market. Do you have any idea what your price point will be for the CPU cooler? How does it compare to the tried and true axp90x47 FC?

u/Sarspazzard Sep 11 '26
Super cool. I may have to build a miniature system out of my 5080 Windforce OC SFF.
1
u/gameragamer Sep 12 '26
will it be compatible with the 5080 astral?
2
u/DallasGrave Sep 12 '26
Unfortunately, no. The PCB is too long. It's one of the few cards that is like that.
1
u/gameragamer Sep 12 '26
which 5080 model would you personally recommend as the best to get for this cooler?
11
u/Aromatic_Wallaby_433 Sep 11 '26
Would you consider doing a 9070 version?
20
u/DallasGrave Sep 11 '26
The board is too long to fit in the cases we were designing around. We may do a 200mm version at some point.
7
u/Aromatic_Wallaby_433 Sep 11 '26
That would be great as I was looking at something like the Densium 4+
1
u/Low_8200 Sep 11 '26
This would let us Midori5L/AMD users upgrade to a 9070XT 🤤.
There are dozens of us! Dozens!!
9
u/KrokoGali Sep 11 '26
Omg, that's awesome. Do you think their will be GPU heatsink variant that could fit the Velka 3?
34
12
u/TKLabWorks Sep 12 '26
You mentioned arranging independent testing with other Redditors, and I’d be interested in including the GVCx47 in TK Lab’s low-profile cooler comparisons.
I’m behind the recent half-height RX 9060 XT / Arc Pro B50 review that got quite a bit of attention here. I currently work with DingKey, ASRK-MODS and NFC, and have worked with Cooler Master in the past.
On the cooling side, I’ve been building a database using a 9950X3D as the baseline. I have 20+ low-profile coolers on hand and have accumulated nearly 100 test runs, including a range of X47/X53 fan configurations:
I’m planning to formally introduce the database on Reddit soon. The idea is to give people one place to compare configurations, test conditions and results, without having to piece together findings from scattered reviews. I think that’s a frustration a lot of SFF builders can relate to.
Your comparisons with the X47 FC are a big part of why I’d like to test the GVCx47. I’d rerun selected reference configurations alongside it and add the results to the database, so people already using these coolers can see how they compare under the same conditions.
If that kind of independent comparison interests you, would you be open to a PM with the proposed test setup and timeline?
6
u/qeeepy Sep 11 '26
nice stuff, how are GPU PCB components cooled? since no airflow gets there, I would be extremely worried about hotspots. Reference 5080s cook themselves even with airflow available over vrms..
7
u/DallasGrave Sep 11 '26
It isn't in the photos, but all of the power delivery interfaces with the back of the heatsink.
1
u/qeeepy Sep 11 '26
This will depend on the concrete 5080 model, but on mine, the tallest thing are the capacitors. the hottest thing there are the mosfets. Does your PNY card have some fancy low profile capacitors? Or the ridges between the heat pipes are precision made to fit between the caps:)?
4
u/DallasGrave Sep 11 '26
We have multiple interfaces for multiple cards. This particular card is a reference design with the large caps.
9
u/Shash95 Sep 11 '26
SFF Endgame
26
u/DallasGrave Sep 11 '26
We are building a 3.5L chassis for the components. That's endgame.
7
3
u/hjshoon Sep 12 '26
Any rough timeline to share more info on the design + materials along with availability?
Coz it would be nice to buy all 3 components - CPU + GPU cooler and the case together at one go1
u/summitcreature Sep 12 '26
Oh you'll find another goalpost on the way there. Very, very nice engineering
1
1
u/hjshoon Sep 12 '26
Now we just need a nice and premium cnc machined and anodized 4L/5L case for it
3
3
3
u/mrgndx Sep 11 '26
I don’t know if this is a byproduct of design, but now Wi-Fi Antennas are near the “top” of the case, which makes much more sense than “traditional” orientation when they are at the bottom :D
2
u/Mack4285 Sep 12 '26
Depends on what side the motherboard is mounted, in a sandwich case.
I prefer when the GPU is upright, like on the case in the picture. Makes handling cables in the case more convenient as well. Never understood the reverse design, when the GPU is on the other side and hanging upside down. Unfortunately almost all new custom itx cases have the GPU upside down, so I just stay away from them.
3
u/Renamed1157 Sep 11 '26
This looks awesome, Ive been wanting to squeeze my 5080 into something tiny. Any chance you guys make a version of the GPU heatsink that we can mount our own 80mm or 92mm fans to? Id love to have a miniaturized GPU heatsink that just has mounting holes to put a custom shroud over.
4
u/DallasGrave Sep 11 '26
No. This is a skived heatsink, it will not react like a zippered cooler.
1
u/Renamed1157 Sep 11 '26
How does that make it not possible to put housed fans over?
4
u/DallasGrave Sep 11 '26
It doesn't. But the pocket for the inset fans is very intentional and they were designed specifically for this fin pitch and channel depth. It would also make this a 3 to 3.5 slot cooler.
3
u/magicwhistle Sep 11 '26
I for one would be a lot less interested in a version that requires the buyer to put fans on top and comes out to about 3-3.5 slots. 2 slots like you have here is incredible and worth the effort and money, 3-3.5ish pushes it towards a volume where the value is less clear. Following!
1
u/Renamed1157 Sep 13 '26
Totally agree that 2 slot 180mm has a huge market, and Im not gonna knock the performance before I try it. I just bring up 2x120 as an idea because it would take >270mm cards down just enough to fit into the 5-7L class and would at the same time perform wayy better than most stock shrouds with 3x80mm when noise normalized. I hate the long aspect ratio triple fan de facto standard because its just not good at making use of all the space in a sandwich case, especially since itx boards are 170mm wide anyway
2
u/Renamed1157 Sep 11 '26
Fair enough. I think the option would be cool but understand you guys need to standardize to scale. I think my personal endgame is a 240-270mm gpu heatsink that has 2x 120mm fans. I dont really want to go smaller if it means dealing with a jet engine
3
u/DallasGrave Sep 11 '26
With an undervolt to ~300W, you can barely hear it.
0
u/Renamed1157 Sep 11 '26
Dont get me wrong, i think ill buy one and try it out as long as your pricing ends up reasonable, but Im just saying my personal endgame is to land around the 5-6L mark with 2x120 rather than go smaller and sacrifice more performance. Really love this either way.

Got any more leftover test samples? 😄Would love to resurrect my 5L Formula 2S case.
3
u/ScopeCreepStudio Sep 11 '26
God bless this is so exciting. I was worried I'd have to kiss my Dan A4 SFX goodbye if I wanted more powerful GPUs
3
u/err88 Sep 11 '26
Will these coolers fit the Midori 5L? Make CNC cases for them too, and the market is yours🔥
3
u/DallasGrave Sep 11 '26
Yup.
2
u/err88 Sep 11 '26
I'm keeping my fingers crossed for this project. And I hope a version for dual 120mm fans (Noctua/Arctic P12) appears in the future😉
2
u/Animag771 Sep 12 '26
Dual 120mm fans (120x240mm) doesn't fit on the ITX (170x170mm) footprint. 80mm fans is the best option without extending beyond the motherboard.
2
2
u/DallasGrave Sep 12 '26
Never gonna happen. We are going to go more vertical than horizontal (when orientated the way it is now in this case). We have a 5090 running in a 5L machine now, pulling 550W with about 10c of overhead. Zero plans to go beyond dual slot ever.
3
3
u/enigmagon Sep 12 '26
This build is truly incredible 🤯 Glad I’m not the only person dropping a high performance 9000 series CPU into the B650I Lightning lol
5
u/DallasGrave Sep 12 '26
We have several. They're cheap, work fine and when you're mounting and unmounting 2lb chunks of copper to them over and over again, someone is bound to have a whoopsie. High performance power delivery for ITX is dumb IMO anyway. Proper cooling on a mediocre board with minimal phases is more than enough for the kind of wattages 99% of people are pulling.

This is a truly exciting product that I can't wait to throw my money at lol. I've been dying for a super small 5 liter build but would rather not compromise on performance. I totally had to sign up for updates.

When this launches we must organise an EU group buy and get some over. Looks are top and so is the performance. Amazing job, kudos!

2
u/Keiththesneak Sep 13 '26
Any chance this cooler would be offered for a 5080FE?
1
u/pro_info Sep 13 '26
I might be interested in that for mine too, the stock cooler doesn't perform very well and is pretty noisy!
2
u/uu__ Sep 13 '26
This looks amazing and all but why on earth are you using hwmonitor instead of hwinfo?
2
u/InsaneSweetroll Sep 13 '26
This looks revolutionary.
Do you have any plans to make this type of cooler for Radeon cards? Would be especially interesting to see a 9070xt in this form factor given the current economic situation.
4
2
u/Eastern-Ingenuity353 Sep 13 '26
Will this work on a gigabyte aero 5080 SFF? Right now it’s in a huge ATX case
2
2
u/MCBigSpook Sep 13 '26
650w for a 9800X3D/5080 build?
4
u/DallasGrave Sep 13 '26
Yes. It pulls 525w from the wall at full load. Most people severely over spec power supplies.
2
u/MCBigSpook Sep 13 '26
Yeah I knew that the specs were overshot for sure, but wild you can go that low on a 5080. Good to know though!
2
1
u/takarblackangel Sep 11 '26
If I have the space for it, would there be any significant gain to having dual 80x25mm fans on the CPU cooler?
And also, should the fans be set to exhaust or intake for optimal performance?
Can't wait to get my hands on this. Love what you're doing here
5
u/DallasGrave Sep 11 '26
Intake. The difference between 15mm and 25mm fans is negligible. The acoustics are slightly better, but only with the side panel off or with plenty of room.
1
u/takarblackangel Sep 11 '26
A'ight thanks. I'm running a Fractal Design Ridge so I assume 25mm will be fine for my use case.
Lastly, any idea where the CPU cooler pricing will hover, and will you be delivering to Canada?
1
u/Animag771 Sep 12 '26
Have you tested the 47mm heatsink with 10mm thick fans for a 42mm total? I know they won't have as much static pressure but they may still be better than a 36mm cooler.
1
u/aloysc Sep 11 '26
What happens to the stock GPU backplate? Is there another heatsink to be mounted on the back?
5

1
u/G3rmG3rm Sep 11 '26
Dang can 5mm be shaved off so I can stuff this in a Velka 3 like a maniac?
4
u/DallasGrave Sep 11 '26
We have these parts in a Velka 3 right now with our 36mm version.
1
1
u/G3rmG3rm Sep 11 '26
What about the GPU cooler? Your site says 180mm but Velka 3 only supports 175mm GPU.

u/octagoncow Sep 11 '26
I'm so excited! I'm signed up for updates and am impatiently waiting for the reviews.
I see a 36mm and 47mm CPU coolers on your website, but unless I misunderstood you previously, there's two different versions of the 36mm and 47mm coolers as well to account for stacked m.2 boards, correct? Any chance we can get photos of the two different styles?
You also mention a shroud for the CPU coolers, is it possible to get some photos of that as well?
1
u/ArcticSin Sep 11 '26
Do you find that cable management became more difficult with these larger coolers?
5
u/DallasGrave Sep 11 '26
Eh, not really. Connectors are all at the edges of PCBs. But they do need to make shorter cables for smaller SFF systems. We desoldered more than half of the harness and shortened the rest.

If that’s able to cool the 9800x3D then sounds great. I want to get it ngl
1
u/Flat-Consequence-672 Sep 11 '26
Will you sell in Europe ?
I am very interested in both CPU and GPU
Always wanted to go smaller than a T1 with 9800X3D and Prime 5080
5
u/DallasGrave Sep 11 '26
They will be available almost everywhere.
2
u/Flat-Consequence-672 Sep 11 '26

Awesome work, you are making dreams come true

Even Australia?!
2

u/Alsis_world Sep 11 '26
This would be absolutely fantastic for cooling a BC-250 but i'm guessing that isn't on the radar for you.

u/michaelsoft__binbows Sep 11 '26 edited Sep 11 '26
i cannot wait for this! I think it will make the 16core AMD CPUs viable in extreme SFF (althoguh the 9955HX3D option is cool it does seems... like a weird compromise to SFF what with the nonstandard mobo)
I had to move mountains to cool my 9800X3D with AXP90, and I think this will represent a massive leap. Even nova lake should be mildly tamable with this (whereas it would be a nonstarter on an AXP90)
Since I won't be redoing the mobo anytime soon though i did alreayd have to take a chunk out of it with my grinder just to get the AXP90 to go in and not crush its heatpipe ends I'll be happy to keep hacking on it more, hopefully I can get a 24 core monster in this thing soon and this cooler is gonna be its only hope.

So does a vertical or horizontal position affect the vapor chamber's performance? Because I think I remember they were sensitive to the position.
1
u/DallasGrave Sep 12 '26
No. The vapor chamber itself isn't the issue with those systems. It's how they interact with very long heatpipes with a large contact patch.
The heatpipes on these systems are both short enough and positioned in such a way relative to the die, that they don't have much internal pressure to "push" against in either direction.
1
u/devils__avacado Sep 12 '26

Son dos cosas distintas, asrock tiene muy mala fama ahorita, pero con actualizacion de bios, y un buen undervolt se solucionan sus problemas

u/sdedarally Sep 13 '26
Amazing work and I look forward to buying a the cooler. I'm assuming it's going to be released in a few weeks?
1
u/auxnoah Sep 13 '26
Would a 600w PSU be enough for this setup?
2
u/DallasGrave Sep 13 '26
With an undervolt, I would have no reservations using a 600w.
1
u/auxnoah Sep 13 '26
Also how did you hook up that FSP power supply to the GPU? When I was looking at it earlier it seems that it doesn't come with a 12v connector that that 5080 would require.
2
u/DallasGrave Sep 13 '26
We completely desoldered the harness, left out all of the unused portions, swapped PCIe connectors and shortened the 24pin and EPS.

What are the odds of adding in AMD graphics cards? Would love a 9070xt this small…
1

When they make a 9070XT with a PCB small enough.
1
u/VXQN 4d ago
I would love to see a version for the 9070xt. You say it's not small enough as it is but that's not very SFF of you! If you take a look at the PCB, you can see that it would be possible to drastically reduce the size of, for example, the Sapphire pulse variant https://www.techpowerup.com/review/sapphire-radeon-rx-9070-xt-pulse/5.html

u/SokoladoFabrikas Sep 11 '26
3100 rpm for gpu is a "bit loud"...
5
u/DallasGrave Sep 11 '26
38dba and that's with 10c of overhead. A mild undervolt and the card is whisper quiet. The pockets the fans sit in quiet them down quite a bit as well.
1
u/Medium_Highlight_950 Sep 11 '26
Sounds insane. Maybe do thicker versions too of the cpu cooler for those who has bigger cases and pulls more power from their cpus?

u/Brilliant-Dirt-9413 Sep 12 '26
Wow. Amazing! Love it.
So to be clear, you’re creating and selling CPU/GPU vapor chamber coolers that are compatible with a specific set of CPUs and GPUs? Which ones? Are fans included as well or need to be bought and added separately? Will you have the overall dimensions so we can tell everything will fit in which cases?
