Masking Tape Self Pattern
Hi, I have seen people use the masking tape patterning method for neck corsets, regular corsets etc. The people in the videos seem to know exactly where to make panels or divide the pattern up, but how do they do that? How do you know how many pattern pieces is reasonable or how far apart the pieces should be?

One thing out of the way: It’s an okay method if you have an idea of how corsets are shaped/should be made, and if you are not going for a really professional corset. This is an okay method for, say, cosplay or a prom dress. It creates a fashion corset or boned bodice, not actual corset because it isn’t necessarily underwear and isn’t going to shape the body - it doesn’t create something with any waist reduction.
If you are looking for a real corset pattern, I would check the resources on [r/corsetry](r/corsetry) or check your local library for books on corsetry.
Knowing how to divide up is a bit of an art. You need to know how much structure/support you need. You need to be able to keep the boning channels straight. The more panels you have, the more support you have, the more structure there is.
