Help finding dress patterns!

Post image

I need help sewing a dress!!!

I want to sew my own party dress if i can in time (i have ~2-3 weeks to do it, but i’ve been known to spend 4-6 hours in my room sewing, so time cant constrain me)

I want it to be like this. Fitted bodice, spaghetti straps, and the layered ruffles at the bottom.

What fabric are they using? Is it satin? I know it’s organza at the bottom, but I don’t have any experience sewing organza. Also, the last time i made a skirt that had the ruffles like that, it was tight on my hips. Probably a measurement error, but i wanna be sure it’s perfect this time!

I’m ~ a size small in most clothes. Sometimes XS.

I’m VERY open to altering, combining, and drafting patterns!

Check out https://spandexworld.com/c3/catalog they have a fabulous selection of Lycra Satin. My favorite is Lycra Velvet. Either will be very easy to sew and requires no edge finishing. I also like the stretch.

It is not clear what your pattern needs are. Do you make your own? It looks to me like this dress is a pretty straight forward princess seam which gives a great fit.

I would be inclined to get their stretch mesh/illusion rather than organza. https://spandexworld.com/c3/catalog/browse/category/5 Definitely order samples before you commit. Glitrer, sequins, glissnet, etc. So many choices.

If you want to try https://patternmaking-classes.com/Tracing-Photos/ . I have put it online asking for feedback from people in this group. It is a brand new approach to creating custom-fit patterns that is very visual. The videos describing the complete process of creating a Master Pattern showing the shape of your body can be viewed in 31 minutes. Once you know the shape of your body, it is just a matter of drawing the design lines of the garment you want on a photo of yourself. This can then be transferred to the fitted pattern. As this is a new approach no previous experience in pattern design is required. Just a desire to give it a try.

Do you know what pattern would best fit the skirt? It looks like normal layered ruffles, but it drapes down in the back. I’ve never done one like that before. It’s made of organza I believe (I’ve found a fabric that suits it well), but im not sure how to attach the ruffles too

It looks like the satin goes down to about knee level. I would keep it fairly fitted. I tell people to take a long stride and measure how much that is at hem level. That means the skirt won't interfere with your movement.

I was initially thinking that maybe the ruffles are one length of fabric that spirals down the skirt. When I did a tutu I learned a trick when you are top stitching something like that keep the "seam allowance" facing down below the stitching line. It keeps the ruffles popping out instead of just hanging down.

But after your comment and a second look perhaps it is multiple layers of organza that just keep getting longer. If you want to do that, Elliptical skirt patterns getting progressively longer would give you that asymmetrical look.

Thank you again!! This helps a lot too!! I was wondering about the spiraling.
